US revokes licences for sales of some chips to China's Huawei

US revokes licences for sales of some chips to China's Huawei | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
The move follows Huawei's release of an AI-enabled computer powered by a chip created by Intel.
Graham Watson's insight:

Again, the US-China trade war rumbles on - this time the Americans have placed restrictions on the export of some computer chips to Huawei, designed to stop the company accelerating its development of artificial intelligence.

Trump says Huawei could be part of trade deal

Trump says Huawei could be part of trade deal | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Huawei could feature in a US-China trade pact despite being "very dangerous", says the US president.
Graham Watson's insight:

And here's the rhetoric getting in the way of the economics.

The fact that President Trump mentions Huawei in this context somewhat invalidates the 'national security' arguments that have been advanced so far. It seems as though Huawei is a 'test case' to see how much China is prepared to compromise to allow one of its largest, and well-known, firms access to global markets.

Meng Wanzhou: Trump could intervene in case of Huawei executive

Meng Wanzhou: Trump could intervene in case of Huawei executive | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
The president says he could act for the good of US trade, as Canada releases Meng Wanzhou on bail.
Graham Watson's insight:

Another example of top quality policymaking from the President of the United States - certainty, the rule of law and the ongoing US-China trade war...

However, the arrest of Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou, is yet another aspect of the ongoing US-China trade war.

BT bars Huawei's 5G kit from core of network

BT bars Huawei's 5G kit from core of network | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
It still plans to use the Chinese company's phone mast antennas and certain other products.
Graham Watson's insight:

It seems that the UK too, is looking to limit Huawei's access to its 5G network, in keeping with the precedent set by the US and New Zealand.

Five things that aren't in the US-China deal... and why

Five things that aren't in the US-China deal... and why | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
It is, in Trump's words, a "monster of a deal", but it doesn't tackle some of the thorniest problems.
Graham Watson's insight:

Perhaps the more insightful BBC piece looking at what the supposed trade deal between the US and China actually doesn't include. And those five areas are particularly significant: industrial subsidies and Made in China 2025, Huawei, access for foreign financial services firms, enforcement and implementation and the continued existence of tariffs.

All of these areas remain unresolved and will be tough to tackle - which is why they've been left for now.

Huawei hits back after Trump declares national emergency on telecoms 'threat' | US news | The Guardian

Huawei hits back after Trump declares national emergency on telecoms 'threat' | US news | The Guardian | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Executive order is ‘unreasonable’ and will harm US consumers, says Huawei, as businesses barred from dealing with firms deemed a risk
Graham Watson's insight:

Protectionism takes many forms, and the 'national security' argument is one of the most insidious. Is Huawei really a threat to national security or is this another prong of the US-China trade war?

Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou arrested in Canada

Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou arrested in Canada | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
The US seeks the extradition of chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, daughter of Huawei's founder.
Graham Watson's insight:

International trade or China? I've put this article here because it's part of a general movement that's seen a number of countries stop allowing Huawei access to their telephone networks. Is it protectionism or a valid response to China violating US sanctions with Iran and North Korea?

But then again, you might ask if the sanctions themselves are legal.

Huawei: NZ bars Chinese firm on national security fears

Huawei: NZ bars Chinese firm on national security fears | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Concerns about espionage risks has sparked global scrutiny of telecoms gear made by China's Huawei.
Graham Watson's insight:

It seems that the US isn't the only country with national security concerns dictating its trade policy: New Zealand has chosen to block the use of Huawei's telecoms equipment in its domestic telephone network. The Head of New Zealand's security services has suggested that this could compromise national security and a new provider of equipment for the 5G network is being sought.
