Lockdowns and stay-at-home orders have saved lives around the world, but these measures alone aren’t responsible for the unprecedented global economic downturn. IMF economist Francesco Grigoli discusses his findings on why the pandemic is affecting young and old, rich and poor, and men and women in very different ways.

The latest World Happiness Report makes for depressing reading, ironically, with the US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy suggesting that children's unregulated use of social media has had a marked effect upon their happiness.
As a result, whilst the global average level of happiness is broadly stable, that of young people aged 15-24 in the US, Australia and New Zealand has dipped below that of those aged 25+.
