US and China meet to 'thaw out' trade tensions - BBC News

The US and China hope to "thaw out" ongoing trade tensions during a three-day visit to Beijing by the US commerce secretary. One of the biggest issues for the US surrounds restrictions on North American businesses, including chip makers, Intel and Micron.

Gina Riomondo's visit to China is the latest to the country by top US diplomats in recent months, all aiming to improve relations between the two countries.

The BBC news clip looks at the ongoing trade dispute between the US and China, with a number of prominent US political figures having recently visited the country, in the hope of resolving ongoing issues, notably protectionist measures and the subsequent retaliation. 

 

This comes against a background of the Chinese economy slowing.

The World Trade Organization faces a crisis in its system for resolving disputes between members.
Graham Watson's insight:

An odd story for the weekend with the World Trade Organisation's appeals court soon to be reduced to only one sitting judge, imperilling the ability of the organisation to resolve trade disputes.

 

The cause of this impasse is - unsurprisingly - the United States, with President Trump suggesting that the organisation has over-stepped its mandate and that it has often ruled against the United States.

 

It's suggested that there are some ways around the problem, but longer term, this stand-off isn't going to help global trade.
