Boosting Regional Connectivity and Resilience in Cameroon and Chad

Across Cameroon and its landlocked neighbor Chad, about 10.7 million people are affected by increased conflicts and violence. Nearly 250,000 people are being forced to flee their homes, causing additional tensions at the borders. This situation is exacerbated with inadequate road and rail transports infrastructures are also hampering the free movement of both people and goods. To reduce fragility and promote resilient and sustainable development, the World Bank is stepping up its support to both countries with activities that will boost regional economic transformation.

Graham Watson's insight:

This World Bank clip highlights many of the key themes of development - the need for greater regional connectivity, the importance of stable infrastructure, and the way that conflict impedes development - in relation to Cameroon and Chad.

Meet Mama Africa, an exceptional truck driver on the Lomé-Ouagadougou corridor

The only female truck driver in West Africa, Maissata Cisse, also known as Mama Africa, is an African citizen at heart. For close to 30 years, she has been crisscrossing the subregion transporting tons of goods to Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire, to name a few. We meet her on one of her journeys to learn more about her atypical career path and her experiences on the road.

Graham Watson's insight:

What a remarkable and uplifting clip, that highlights one woman's remarkable story, and in doing so highlights the importance of transport, free trade and regional economic co-operation to development.
