Africa's patchy transport network gets a tech boost

Africa's patchy transport network gets a tech boost | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
The first year of a free trade deal in Africa has spurred investment, but more needs to be done.
Graham Watson's insight:

This BBC article looks at the prospects for a more co-ordinated transport infrastructure across Africa, with The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement being agreed by 54 countries across the continent and the development of services like Amitruck that looks to connect truckers with customers cutting out the intermediaries.

Both have the capacity to significantly increase trade flows and enhance development prospects, with the World Bank suggesting it may "boost exports among African nations by 81% by 2035".

Anti-Brexit tycoon George Soros says EU faces 'existential crisis'

Anti-Brexit tycoon George Soros says EU faces 'existential crisis' | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Brexit is "immensely damaging" and must be stopped but the EU also must change, says George Soros.
Graham Watson's insight:

The Leavers bogeyman, George Soros, has spoken out against the EU in its current form, arguing that it should be the sort of organisation that the UK would want to join.

Despite this actually being fairly close to what many Leave voters probably want, watch how he is demonised as a result. And, throw in his part in Britain leaving the ERM (something that Leavers will have (a) been in favour of (b)  made many of them a fair amount of money) this depiction of him is even easier to understand.

RCEP: Asia-Pacific countries form world's largest trading bloc

RCEP: Asia-Pacific countries form world's largest trading bloc | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership covers nearly a third of the global economy.

Graham Watson's insight:

A rare bit of good news to end 2020, 15 nations have created an Asia-Pacific free trade area to be known as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). It should enhance trade in the region and generate significant economic gains.

If only we in Britain could be a member of such a powerful trading bloc...

Canada under pressure after Nafta partners US and Mexico agree new terms for a free-trade deal.
Graham Watson's insight:

Has the tide turned back in favour of free trade, with news that the US and Mexico have signed a trade deal, or is this a false dawn?

Either way, it seems that there's one feature of the Trump presidency that is consistent. It's inconsistency.

Could ACFTA free trade deal be a new dawn for Africa? - BBC News

As African heads of state sign the first continent wide free trade deal, what will it mean for the people that live there? The BBC's Nancy Kacungira explains.

Graham Watson's insight:
It seems like Africa is on the brink of its first continental-wide free trade deal, with almost all nations about to sign up to the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) looking to foster intra-African trade.

As a point of comparison, around 70% of EU trade is intra-EU trade. However, in Africa the figure is only 16% and a free trade area is likely to boost that, raising living standards and welfare as a result of trade creation.
