Digital Textbooks Are Forcing a Radical Shift in Higher Ed

Digital Textbooks Are Forcing a Radical Shift in Higher Ed | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

FOR SEVERAL DECADES, textbook publishers followed the same basic model: Pitch a hefty tome of knowledge to faculty for inclusion in lesson plans; charge students an equally hefty sum; revise and update its content as needed every few years. Repeat. But the last several years have seen a shift at colleges and universities—one that has more recently turned tectonic.

Of all of the aspects of the student experience currently under scrutiny, you’d maybe think that academic textbooks were uncontroversial and their efficacy clearly understood. You’d think that the academic benefits of textbooks would be incontestable, and that both students and staff were clear on how textbooks are used to support learning. You’d be wrong.

I have a confession to make. For many years, I’ve done odd jobs for Bedford Books, which specializes in writing handbooks as well as other textbooks. One of the projects I worked on had a nifty free website, Research and Documentation Online. Chances are, a lot of you have links to this site on your library or course page. If you click on it now, though, you’ll find out that it’s not there anymore.

The problem with textbooks and how to keep them relevant —

The problem with textbooks and how to keep them relevant — | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Textbooks have been the backbone of teaching methods for centuries, and possibly they will remain like that for a long time. But there are valid concerns about their current effectiveness. The Digital Revolution brought a fundamental change in the way we produce and consume content. Digital media like newspapers, blogs and websites generate vast volumes of information daily, and social media keep us in a continuous conversation.

Methods and sources of learning cannot be rigid anymore. They need to be flexible, adaptable and connected with knowledge production in real time. Do textbooks check all the boxes of these new requirements?

Academic Libraries and the Textbook Taboo: Time to Get Over It?

Academic Libraries and the Textbook Taboo: Time to Get Over It? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Academic libraries have historically avoided collecting textbooks, for several reasons. Perhaps the most important are these:

Philosophical: Academic libraries tend to see themselves primarily as supporters of research, and classroom texts are not research materials.
Practical: Library collections (and collecting practices) have their origins in the print era, when housing and managing a comprehensive textbook collection would have been a daunting challenge, both fiscally and logistically.
