Using Twitter Chats for Teacher Professional Development

Using Twitter Chats for Teacher Professional Development | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
For the broader culture, Twitter is usually perceived as a vast wasteland of gossip, rumor, and incivility. But teachers have transformed their corner of Twitter into something else entirely. Increasing numbers of teachers have been using Twitter chats for professional development. Most chats are specific to a certain subject, but some are regional, and others focus on specific student populations.

While this might seem like a surprising turn of events, there are several advantages to using Twitter. First, it makes it possible for teachers to find like-minded and similarly-situated practitioners. It is a convenient gathering place for teachers from a wide variety of disciplines, and the platform makes it simple for them to join together. It has established the critical mass necessary to accomplish the goal of having a broad enough community to generate useful content.

Every Teacher Needs a Mentor

Every Teacher Needs a Mentor | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
My mentor for the last 15 years, Liz Harrington, is retiring this year. She’s the one who, as our department chairperson, advocated for our weekly collaboration time and fought each semester to maintain our precious planning time as a department. Liz is the one I laugh with each Friday when we close our rooms at lunch and steal away for some caffeine. She’s the one who keeps my venting from becoming perpetual smog, and the one who swoops in with a last-minute lesson plan if I have to run and pick up my own sick kid. Liz is the first person I call to share my small victories and my embarrassing defeats.

We rarely accept “sit and get” instruction as ideal for our students. So why is it still the most common form of professional development for teachers across the country?

In a rapidly diversifying district with a largely white teaching force, how do you foster mutual trust and understanding? Send teachers to school.

By Carly Berwick, May 19, 2017
One day this past March, a middle school student placed a new Air Jordan on his desk at school in Montgomery County, Maryland. The boy, who is Latino, became fixated on the shoe, rubbing the leather and fingering the laces. His teacher, who is white, asked him to put it away, but the boy refused. He became “combative,” according to the teacher, and a tug-of-war ensued. Security was called to remove the shoe.

20 Things You Can Learn In 10 Minutes To Become A Better Teacher -

20 Things You Can Learn In 10 Minutes To Become A Better Teacher - | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Becoming a better teacher is likely a big part of why you’re here.

Based on reader feedback, surveys, comments, and other observations we’ve noticed over the years, the vast majority of you are already ‘good’ at what you do.

Few incompetent professionals that consistently seek to improve remain incompetent. If you’re here–or at edutopia, or knee-deep in a book from ASCD, for example–reading and skimming and sharing and responding to ideas, it’ll be difficult for you to resist growing.
