Learning with bees | Learning with 'e's | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

One of the most impressive TED talks I ever viewed was presented by Neuroscientist Beau Lotto and a 12 year-old student called Amy O'Toole.

Amy had earlier attended Blackawton Primary School in South Devon, under the headship of visionary educator Dave Strudwick. Dave invited Beau to do some research with the children on visual perception, and they turned their attention to the vision of bees.

Open Data as Open Educational Resources: Case studies of emerging practice | Open Education Working Group

Open Data as Open Educational Resources: Case studies of emerging practice | Open Education Working Group | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

his post marks the official publication of the volume: Open Data as Open Educational Resources: Case studies of emerging practice.

The process of developing this book was a learning experience for us. We had no prior experience in independent publishing, but instead of going the traditional route of attempting to find a professional publisher, in the spirit of openness, we decided to self publish, and to make the entire process as open as possible. The intention of this book is to showcase good practices in an approachable way that can be understood by those who are not necessarily very familiar with open data or data analysis, in order to promote the use of open data as OER to educators, researchers and other organisations.

a blog exploring ethnography, usability and user experience in libraries

Occasionally in library and information work the ‘Next Big Thing’ readily presents itself, it becomes impossible to ignore and once you’ve heard about it, the Next Big Thing crops up everywhere. Now if you weren’t already on this #UKAnthrolib blog there might be an element of suspense to this post but as you are here – welcome by the way – no prizes for guessing that the current Next Big Thing is indisputably the adoption of anthropological research methods in libraries.

Have Students Make Lists Before Starting Web Search

Have Students Make Lists Before Starting Web Search | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This is an excerpt from a book that I have been working on for the last fifteen months. I'm getting close to finishing it.

Our students have become accustomed to entering a search into Google as soon as they are confronted by a question to which they don’t have an answer on the tips of their tongues. However, if they’re forced to take a few minutes before they search, they often find that they already know the answer. This is why a pre-search checklist should include listing what you already know about a topic. This list can be generated from memory or from notebooks (physical and digital). Not only does this process refresh students' memories, it also saves time in the long-run because they aren't spending time searching for information that they already have.
