“Moodle Man!” came the cry from behind me. I cringed. I’d made the fatal mistake of walking through the campus helpdesk area during lunchtime on assignment hand-in day. I turned, clutching my meal deal, to see a student, and one of my regular customers, come barrelling towards me, laptop in hand. “How do I submit my assignment again?” she asked. “I really need a Jill Watson,” I said, abandoning my sandwich behind the desk. “Who’s Jill Watson?” came the reply. “Never mind, let’s have a look at your assignment”.

Just before the start of term there was some exciting news in the world of copyright, when the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA)’s new higher education licence was launched. Also importantly the limit of 5% of a work has been increased to 10% – hurray I hear you say! In case you didn’t know, the CLA licence is what covers you to make photocopies for students for use in teaching, it’s a blanket licence, but there are some important limits and exclusions. The licence also covers scanning, and for many years we have offered a highly efficient Epack service (now called Scanned Readings service) in the library. So why do we do this?

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction. Via Nik Peachey

Nik makes some great points about Moodle - or really putting any content online - there has to be instructional design training, online teaching training or blended teaching training and how to select content for online delivery. technical training alone is not enough.

Problems and possibilities of Moodle (and other similar platforms) outlined by Nik Peachey:
* Why Moodle courses often suck? Not so intuitive platform to work with, lack of teacher training and skills to create online learning material (I agree with these points), excess security issues.
* What to do to improve.
* Comment about ready-made courses. There are various problems, for example these often contain little student-teacher or peer interaction. I agree that the ready-made digital material, in my experience, is not very personalisable (and therefore difficult to teach in an inspired way).
* How to develop your Moodle skills? The post gives 9 links to practical video tutorials (how to create a quiz, add a youtube, etc.). There are also free Moodle platforms to practice.

As the MOOCosphere expanded, more and more platforms sprung into action. Some have already delivered large numbers of MOOCs, such as the open source platform EdX and the Coursera. The other big ticket platform is Udacity which has now morphed into a specific market – corporate training. Although the wellspring was in the US, the UK, Europe, India, Russia, Brazil and many others have joined the party. The global LMS/VLE vendors (Blackboard, Desire2learn, SAP) and Moodle have jumped on the bandwagon. Some so-called MOOC platforms aren’t really platforms at all – they’re aggregators. Using the word ‘platform’ to mean ‘place or URL’ on the web. There’s also the ‘let’s call it a MOOC even though it is not’ mob. Apart from this last category, it’s all good.
