2018 Education Research Highlights

2018 Education Research Highlights | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Researchers studied students’ brains as they learned and took another look at the marshmallow test, learning styles, and growth mindset.

Education research continues to remind us of the powerful impact teachers have on children. This impact is overwhelmingly positive—the studies we highlight here demonstrate specific ways in which teachers can or already do help students feel a sense of belonging in school and make gains in learning.

There are areas for improvement, though: Researchers have shown that different rates of suspensions and expulsions for black and white boys have more to do with adult perceptions of those kids than with their behaviors.

Mindsets for the 21st century and beyond

Mindsets for the 21st century and beyond | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The world is morphing into a place that no one can foresee. How can we prepare students to live and work in that place?

Not long ago, people could learn job skills and use them indefinitely, but now jobs and skill sets are becoming obsolete at an alarming rate. This means that students, and later adults, need to expect and thrive on challenges and know how to turn failures into stepping stones to a brighter future.

When I was a beginning researcher I wanted to see how children coped with setbacks, so I gave 5th graders simple problems followed by hard problems—ones they couldn’t solve. Some hated the hard ones, some tolerated them, but, to my surprise, some relished them. One unforgettable child rubbed his hands together, smacked his lips, and declared, “I love a challenge!” Another said, “I was hoping this would be informative.” They didn’t think they were failing, they thought they were learning. Although this was years ago, they were already 21st century kids.

Seven Ways to Break the Consumer Mindset in Schools | John Spencer

Seven Ways to Break the Consumer Mindset in Schools | John Spencer | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When I look at the data, I notice a trend. Students have never used their devices creatively. They have the power to capture and tell a story but they don't. They have the power to connect to an authentic audience, but it's not happening. They have the potential to build models and design products and turn things from wild ideas to tangible realities. However, it's not happening.

The 8 Best Ways to Give Your Learners a Lifelong Learning Mindset | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When we talk about the lifelong learning mindset, we think about the cultivating of habits as opposed to just the achieving of goals. The lifelong learning mindset is more than just about the need to learn; it’s about a desire to learn that lasts—you guessed it—a lifetime. What does it mean for students to adopt such habits, and more importantly, how can we help them do it?

Carol Dweck offers a theory of Mindset. People can be classified into either Fixed or Growth Mindset states. People that possess a growth Mindset rise to challenges and learn from feedback on their mistakes. This chart can change your mindset and unlock new learning opportunities - Learn Egg | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This chart helps lay out the basic idea behind changing your mindset. You can use a 'fixed' or a 'growth' mindset to enhance your life. Which will you choose?

What do you do when you fail? How do you approach a new problem in life or in the classroom? You may tell yourself that you already have figured out a way to solve a problem or, perhaps, you’re not going to even attempt to solve a problem because you don’t want to fail.

What if you could change your mindset and figure out a new way to approach learning and life as a whole?
