Measurement vs success Tweet from @fastcrayon

If our measures don’t reflect that which leverages real success for students, then neither will the strategies we implement to do well on those measures. When we change our measures to be more meaningful, our methods will inevitably become more meaningful to our students as well.

Schools are measuring students in multiple ways — sometimes making that information public. The potential pitfalls are multiplying, too.

Perception and Reality: Measuring Digital Skills in Europe - ICS Foundation

The ECDL Foundation have published a new position paper showing the danger of relying on self-assessment to demonstrate digital skills.

How do you measure digital skills? How do you work out whether a candidate for a job has the skills and competences that they will need to do the work? Letting people self-assess their skills can seem like a simple solution, but it brings a big risk that they will misjudge their abilities.

Altmetrics Ambassadors | Academic Libraries

Altmetrics Ambassadors | Academic Libraries | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

“Altmetrics: A manifesto,” published five years ago this month, described an academic publishing landscape in which the volume of literature was exploding, and the three traditional filters used to help researchers gauge the relative importance of individual papers in their fields—peer review, citation counting, and a journal’s average citations per article—were failing to keep up. Scholars were moving their work onto the web, and alternative, article-level metrics drawn from online reference managers Zotero and Mendeley, scholarly social bookmarking services such as CiteULike, or even page-views of blogs and “likes” or comments on mainstream social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter could be used to track the impact of new research in real time, wrote Impactstory cofounder Jason Priem; Wikimedia Foundation head of research Dario Taraborelli; Paul Groth, then-researcher VU University Amsterdam; and Cameron Neylon, then–senior scientist at the Science and Technology Facilities Council. Could these new metrics be just as relevant as peer review and citations when judging the impact and influence of new research?

I can’t measure learning, only the symbolic artifacts of learning.

That’s not so strange. We measure civic responsibility by how many people vote, but we can’t measure how “good” those votes are, the extent to which they are backed by intelligent thought or research into the issues. We can only measure outcomes.

More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Level of Learning

More Progressive Ways to Measure Deeper Level of Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
How do we measure learning beyond knowledge of content? Finding that winning combination of criteria can prove to be a complicated and sometimes difficult process. Schools that are pushing boundaries are learning that it takes time, a lot of conversation, and a willingness to let students participate in that evaluation.

Teaching rubrics are a common tool in any classroom, but they can easily become a disguised checklist of tasks, instead of a living document designed to structure learning towards a desired skill or outcome. Setting clear goals about what students should know and be able to do when they graduate high school is a good way to start.

Measures of Effective Teaching (MET ) Project : Welcome

Measures of Effective Teaching (MET ) Project : Welcome | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The MET project released progress reports as its research and analysis progressed. Through these reports, practitioners and policy makers have had quick access to the data developed through the project in order to begin thinking through the practical implications of the work prior to release of the final report.

In January 2013, the MET project released its third and final set of findings, which sought to answer three questions from practitioners and policy-makers: Can measures of effective teaching identify teachers who better help students learn?; How much weight should be placed on each measure of effective teaching when combining classroom observations, student surveys, and student achievement gains?; And how can teachers be assured trustworthy results from classroom observations?
