Putting Critical Information Literacy into Context: How and Why Librarians Adopt Critical Practices in their Teaching – In the Library with the Lead Pipe

Putting Critical Information Literacy into Context: How and Why Librarians Adopt Critical Practices in their Teaching – In the Library with the Lead Pipe | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Critical information literacy asks librarians to work with their patrons and communities to co-investigate the political, social, and economic dimensions of information, including its creation, access, and use. This approach to information literacy seeks to involve learners in better understanding systems of oppression while also identifying opportunities to take action upon them. An increasing number of librarians appear to be taking up critical information literacy ideas and practices in various ways, from cataloging to reference. But what does it mean to make critical information literacy part of one’s work? To learn more about how and why academic librarians incorporate critical information literacy into their classroom instruction, I interviewed thirteen librarians living in the United States. This article describes why and how these individuals take a critical approach to teaching about libraries and information, including the methods they use, the barriers they face, and the positive influences that keep them going.

In  the most recent installment of our #ReferenceStrategy webinar series, four librarians shared strategies they've used to build successful faculty engagement programs on their campuses. Rebecca Donlan outlined a program Florida Gulf Coast University created to enhance their culture of inquiry "from composition to capstone." Horry Georgetown Technical College's Nicole Romyak and Chris Williams explained concrete examples of initiatives they've taken to reach out to faculty on their campus and the results such efforts have yielded. Jennifer Hill from Excelsior College outlined how her institution's course development teams have benefitted faculty, librarians, and students.

Librarians and teachers - How to make an information literacy framework work for you. | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
An information literacy framework is the building block of skills that every student needs to become competent in todays world of information overload. It is the set of skills that ensures that every student becomes independent learners and critical thinkers. So why do we not already have one in every school? Is it a lack of understanding of what information literacy is? Is it because we think that Google can answer everything? Is it because we believe that all students can already do this? I truly have no idea, but over the last few years it has become apparent that although students are very competent at using technology their ability to research has not changed from the time that we only had books and if anything it has become worse.

Computing and digital literacy initiatives aren’t new in the library — planned programs and educational offerings that support digital citizenship exist in nearly every library in the nation. But digital literacy is developed not only via programs and classes; learning is supported by informal interactions between library staff and patrons. It’s important not to overlook instruction that occurs on a one-to-one basis.

Special Librarians and Recognition Networks: The “How” of Learning

Special Librarians and Recognition Networks: The “How” of Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The final network in Universal Design for Learning is the strategic network. Its focus is on how learning takes place. The goal for this network is for learners to be “strategic and goal-directed” (CAST, 2019b). To do this, CAST (2019a) recommends educators provide multiple ways for students to express their learning.

Every individual expresses themselves in different ways. This means they also convey what they have learned in various ways. These variations can be due to physical limitations, language barriers, or different ways of understanding content. When we are working with library users in training sessions, in new hire orientations, or conducting internal staff training, we want to provide many opportunities for each person to showcase their learning. Taking time for individuals to demonstrate what they have learned helps us know that

Three most important skills for students to learm [Tweet from] @edutopia

Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

All three are information literacy skills that  librarians teach. More co-teaching with academics/teachers could go some way to embedding these skills in the courses being taught.

Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment April 8, 2018 10:59 AM
I agree Elizabeth, embed information literacy into the curriculum, including the school librarian and these skills will become part of the norm.

Districts nationwide are looking for new and innovative ways to provide training and resources for their staff, all while keeping within a limited budget. What many administrators fail to notice is that their greatest asset is already in their building.

It’s the 21st century, and school librarians are no longer just “the keepers of the books.” Librarians and media specialists are highly trained, highly versatile staff members, whose scope of responsibilities spans all students and all subjects.

An essential partnership.

Teaching is changing. What was once a solo pursuit has increasingly become a team sport. I’m not talking about co-faculty taught courses. Rather, the team that I’m thinking about includes a mix of faculty and non-faculty educators. I’m here to make the case that a librarian is a key member of a course development and teaching team. First - before we talk about librarians - let’s talk about teaching teams. My experience with building a team of faculty and non-faculty educators to design and run courses comes out of online learning.

“Hands-Off” Teaching: Conversation as Pedagogy in Library Instruction

“Hands-Off” Teaching: Conversation as Pedagogy in Library Instruction | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I have an abiding belief that learning begins in conversation. Both instincts and my own experience in the classroom tell me that when you engage a student in conversation about their “topic” you are often engaging them in a way that gives voice to an idea that has just been rolling around in their heads, one they may be really struggling with and not even know how to approach. When they engage with each other, they become part of what I have previously called a community of scholars — making meaning and contributing to knowledge together. Which is also how learning happens.

A Survey Of Librarians Perceptions Of Information Literacy Techniques | Simone L. Yearwood et al

Teaching research competencies and information literacy is an integral part of the academic librarian’s role. There has long been debate among librarians over what are the most effective methods of instruction for college students. Library Faculty at a large urban University System were surveyed to determine their perceptions of the effectiveness of common information literacy instruction techniques. The system includes both two-year and four-year programs, as well as degree granting institutions. This research was undertaken for the purpose of better prioritizing institutional teaching activities in the current academic climate. The research shows that librarians within the University System believed that instructional models which give librarians more time with students, particularly highly-engaged students, are the most effective.
