What Matters More: Skills or Degrees?

What Matters More: Skills or Degrees? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

We increasingly hear employers, prospective students and futurists saying that it is all about the skills, not about the degree. What does that mean for higher ed?

July 10, 2019

Historically, employers made the baccalaureate, and in some cases advanced degrees, the gateway to an interview. If you did not hold the sheepskin, you would not get in the door. But times have changed. Rapidly advancing technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, robotics and the advent of quantum computing have created an environment in which much of what is learned in college becomes outdated in a few short years. Certainly, the soft skills of creative thinking, critical thinking, communication and leadership do not go out of date and remain in demand by employers. But the hard facts and skills of most of the disciplines are changing as technology ripples through the economy and society.

Defining “Needs” and Separating them from “Wants”: Central to Any Successful IT Project

Defining “Needs” and Separating them from “Wants”: Central to Any Successful IT Project | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

While maintaining a collaborative environment, IT leaders must take a leading role in helping to define the scope and requirements of major projects on their campuses—ensuring needs and wants are defined, understood and kept separate.

Recently a client came to me and asked for a new, very expensive laptop. They touted how light it was—only two and a half pounds! They talked up the fact that this laptop doubled as a tablet and would allow them to take really good notes during meetings. They then switched gears and started complaining about their current computer. It was an immovable desktop. It was old. It was slow.

US Library Survey 2016 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The Ithaka S+R Library Survey 2016 examines strategy and leadership issues from the perspective of academic library deans and directors. This project aims to provide academic librarians and higher education leaders with information about chief librarians’ visions and the opportunities and challenges they face in leading their organizations.

In fall 2016, we invited library deans and directors at not-for-profit four-year academic institutions across the United States to complete the survey, and we received 722 responses for a response rate of 49 percent.[1]

What’s at the top of the learning and teaching agenda in the UK? | Jisc Inform / Issue 38, Winter 2013 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Students are more satisfied than ever according to the National Student Survey results, which revealed that 85% were happy with the teaching on their courses. And on the other side of the desk, institutions are working hard to raise standards and meet student expectations. Last year, Jisc and our partners began to take a more holistic approach to supporting learning and teaching in universities with bespoke consultation and workshops, as well as a leadership development course for leading in technology-enhanced change. The early results are encouraging: the University of Gloucestershire said their involvement in the project “will produce a long-term legacy in changed culture and behaviour.”

How to Give an Emotionally Intelligent Presentation

How to Give an Emotionally Intelligent Presentation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Emotions play an active role in almost all of our decision making. That's one reason why emotional intelligence, the ability to identify, understand, and manage those emotions, is such an invaluable skill.

But how specifically does emotional intelligence help us with our daily tasks? Here are three tips to make sure your next presentation is emotionally intelligent:

1. Don't get anxious. Get excited.

All of us get nervous before a presentation, even if we've done it hundreds of times. So take that nervousness and turn it into something positive: enthusiasm. How do you do that exactly?

Spend those final few moments reviewing your favorite parts of the presentation. Remind yourself why you're doing this, and focus on the value you have to deliver to your listeners.

Now, take that enthusiasm and give a talk that you passionately believe in.

A mentor told me some years ago to get over myself when it comes to speaking and presentations. She said that we are there to serve the room not to focus on ourselves. This short article will help if you are nervous about speaking or presenting.

The 7 Habits of Highly Impactful Librarians | edu@scholastic | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

During my 15-year tenure at both Library Journal and School Library Journal, I had the good fortune to meet the most dynamic and successful librarians in every possible domain, ranging from academe to the corporate world, from municipal government to K–12. During this time, a compelling pattern came to me in sharp relief: All of the most creative and effective librarians that I had ever come across shared the same qualities. When I examined their respective “road maps” to success, they deployed all of the same core principles.

5 Ways to Become an Education Game Changer - Brilliant or Insane

5 Ways to Become an Education Game Changer - Brilliant or Insane | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Education needs more than players. It needs game changers. Here are 5 ways to become a game changer.

Game changer may be an overused term in sports and a few other professions, but I don’t think the phrase is used often enough in education. Could this be because we don’t know who education’s game changers are or if they exist at all?

A game changer is a visionary. A game changer sees what others do not see or are unwilling to see. A game changer takes the risks that most people fear.
