Defining Learning Innovation | Technology and Learning

Defining Learning Innovation | Technology and Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

By Joshua Kim - November 20, 2018

Institutional commitment, organizational change, and the goal to make non-incremental advances in student learning.

Higher ed people are deeply fatigued from hearing too much innovation talk. The concept of innovation has lost most of its meaning through overuse.

When innovation is discussed, it is often as a hammer to pound “incumbent” institutions for not understanding that they must “disrupt themselves” or die.

Can innovation be reclaimed? Is it possible to think of innovation through the lens of advancing learning?

My definition of learning innovation is institutional and organizational in scale.

A college or university serious about innovation will prioritize investments in making non-incremental advances in student learning.

Marketisation could undermine higher education innovation

Marketisation could undermine higher education innovation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The university sector in the United Kingdom is hugely diverse and that diversity is increasing rapidly. It is not just that devolution to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland has encouraged regional diversity but that institutional missions, modes of operation and methods of governance are so different.

For some, universities are about creating and disseminating knowledge. For others, students are at the heart of everything they do and others are very directly reliant on tuition fees. Many for-profits, meanwhile, are about the bottom line. This diversity has important implications for policy-making. A policy that favours one kind of institution may severely disadvantage another.

What lies beneath: Reflections on a community consultation and ethnographic research on the implications of the use of technology for ... [18-67]| ALT Annual Conference 2018

The session reports on two studies based around Jisc’s investigation into the Next Generation of Digital Learning Environments. The first study asked questions about the technology in use, and emergent technologies that impact on learning and teaching. This involved framing the question as a “what if” and a “what would” around next generation digital learning technologies. This methodology relied on passive recruitment, with participants contributing a range of submissions from as short as a tweet to extensive papers.

The second report is based on data elicited from interviews with teaching staff about their practice. The methodology was to recruit teaching staff and use the same set of questions to interview each. Example questions include Tell me about the teaching you do. Where do you teach? How do you learn about teaching? Who do you talk to/communicate with about teaching? What is the balance of teaching with the rest of the work you do? What do you wish you could do around teaching? What are you not getting to do that you would like to be able to do?

Meaningful education in times of uncertainty

Meaningful education in times of uncertainty | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Change is happening at a disorienting pace and our institutions can barely keep up.

That’s why, in March 2017, we convened a meeting of top thought leaders in the fields of learning, innovation, and technology. We asked them: how can we rapidly accelerate progress in education—not only to help marginalized communities catch up to where the privileged are today, but also to reach a more effective, holistic, and equitable education for every child in the world?

#LTHEchat: Innovation

#LTHEchat: Innovation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Innovation is an overused term that means a lot of different things to many people with little innovative practice harnessed within higher education.

When we talk about ‘innovation’, some involved in learning technology will argue that they are innovative but are they? Is looking after IT systems or supporting the implementation of a VLE innovative?

- From Blended Learning to Creating Innovators | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This week, we launched our Creating Innovators Grant Project and I am really excited about the possibilities.  The project involves peer  coaching, where some of our most creative and innovative teachers have agreed to mentor 2 teachers in their schools who otherwise would probably not have volunteered for this kind of in-depth professional development. The mentor teachers applied to participate, and were selected not only based on their own creative teaching talents, but from an expressed desire to learn and grow themselves through the experience.
