Across the higher education sector, aspirations to internationalise the student body, transform approaches to education, increase student recruitment and generate revenue are all on the agenda.

Once, universities might have been able to do all of this on their own. But it looks less likely as we move towards a digitally integrated future. Evidence-based pedagogical approaches for online education mean that very high quality engaged learning is now available at scale. But making the right choices of technologies and deploying them effectively requires effective partnerships and collaborations with providers.

It’s a tough time for colleges. Enrollment has declined in each of the past five years, largely concentrated in for-profits, but public schools are seeing drops as well. Demographers predict further drops in demand, one of many factors putting pressure on the traditional business model of college.

A strategic approach to inclusive practice in higher education | Jisc

A strategic approach to inclusive practice in higher education | Jisc | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There's a significant upward trend in the number of disabled students entering higher education (HE). From 2016, funding changes in England mean that non-medical support such as note-taking, alternative formats and study support has been reduced, placing greater responsibility on institutions. The most cost effective response is to improve procurement processes and ensure inclusive practice is embedded in teaching, learning and assessment.

Both the 21st-century economy and the careers needed to fuel it are changing at an unprecedented rate. Students must be prepared for nonlinear careers, pivoting to match the ever-changing work landscape. We thus need to rethink not just how we teach our students but what we teach our students.

Learning with 'e's: Beneath the facade...

If we scratch just below the surface of education, and we examine the nature of knowledge, we see an interesting challenge. It is increasingly apparent that knowledge as we 'know it' is inextricably linked to those who are in control of it. The knowledge gate-keepers have been in charge for some time, and knowledge is power. But all of this is already changing, as those beyond the inner circle begin to understand that through technology, they can create knowledge too. Our conceptions of knowledge could be said to be in a state of flux and uncertainty. If we accept that there is no monopoly anymore we need to ask some questions. In an age where anyone with an internet connection can create content, who now decides what we accept as a 'fact', and who is in control of our representations of reality?

Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

Education and knowledge is at a crossroad, control is no longer in the hands of the few. We are all in control now - are the ivory towers about to come down? How we apply knowledge will decide the future outcome for education.

Digital transformation in education: The FutureLearn view

Digital transformation in education: The FutureLearn view | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In this piece, Nigel Smith of The Open University-owned FutureLearn, reflects on digital transformation in education over the past six years since MOOCs (massive open online courses) first burst onto the scene

There is no choice but to innovate in scaling the supply of education. Otherwise, people desperate to learn are excluded.

Digital transformation has had a huge impact on the education sector. Six years ago ‘MOOCs’ (Massive Open Online Courses) became a buzzword with the New York Times going so far as to say 2012 was “the year of the MOOC.”

he term open education has recently been used to refer to topics such as Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Historically its roots lie in civil approaches to education and open universities, but this research is rarely referenced or acknowledged in current interpretations. In this article the antecedents of the modern open educational movement are examined, as the basis for connecting the various strands of research. Using a citation analysis method the key references are extracted and their relationships mapped.

Ed-Tech's Inequalities

Ed-Tech's Inequalities | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This talk was delivered virtually today at Western Oregon University. The slide deck is available here.

“Education is the civil rights issue of our time,” you’ll often hear politicians and education reform types say.

[snip]

What are the implications for equity here if, for example, we uncritically pursue trends like the “flipped classroom” – that is, asking students to watch video lectures at home? What assumptions are we making about “home”? Can MOOCs really solve the opportunity gap if those without a college or high school degree are far less likely to have adequate let alone affordable Internet access?
