50 Activities To Promote Digital Media Literacy In Students

50 Activities To Promote Digital Media Literacy In Students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Literacy is changing–not at its core necessarily, but certainly at its edges as it expands to include new kinds of “reading.”

Digital media is quickly replacing traditional media forms as those most accessible to most 21st century learners. The impact of this change is extraordinarily broad, but for now we’ll narrow it down to changes in how learners respond to the media they consume.

50 Activities To Promote Digital Media Literacy In Students

Literacy is changing–not at its core necessarily, but certainly at its edges as it expands to include new kinds of “reading.”

Digital media is quickly replacing traditional media forms as those most accessible to most 21st century learners. The impact of this change is extraordinarily broad, but for now we’ll narrow it down to changes in how learners respond to the media they consume.

The most fundamental pattern of formal academia is to read something and then write about it. Sometimes this writing comes in the form of responding to questions, while other time it’s in the form of an essay. And sometimes the reading is watching, playing with, or otherwise interacting with a digital media. So I thought it might make sense to compile a list of “things” learners can do as the result of “consuming” a digital media.

This is an excellent mix of activities with various media - So good to see it itemized and recommended for inclusion across the curriculum.  Ideas include great ideas for cooperative /team ventures.

I registered for the Get Interactive: Practical Teaching with Technology, it sounded interesting-but so did the rest of these courses!

I've taken Coursera's Copyright for Educators and Librarians

course offered by Duke, Emory and UNC-CH, it was excellent.

A Plea for Pedagogy | Online Learning | HYBRID PEDAGOGY

A Plea for Pedagogy | Online Learning | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Hybrid Pedagogy is an academic and networked journal of learning, teaching, and technology that combines the strands of critical pedagogy and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses of technology and digital media in education.

It goes without saying that technology is changing education. Children’s brains are being rewired, universities are being threatened with extinction, and we will be in serious trouble if we ignore the transformative power of new technologies. We live in an information/knowledge economy where we are constantly connected to networks of information, our experiences become more and more mediated. It seems that technology changes everything, including education.

Or does it? It seems to me that so-called innovations attributed to technology in teaching and learning are mostly pedagogical strategies cloaked in digital media. Specifically, current trendy approaches that proclaim the transformative power of technology in education are really no more than misunderstandings. The term “approaches” I use liberally. Some practitioners would prefer their perspective of choice to be labeled a program, theory, or framework. This in itself is interesting, but beyond the scope of these reflections. If educational technology rhetoric is misleading, what lies beneath the language of innovation? - See more at: http://www.hybridpedagogy.com/Journal/files/Plea_for_Pedagogy.html#sthash.CIlDKZRE.dpufIt

This sentence -- this one right here -- is the first sentence I’ve written in two months that wasn’t co-authored in a Google Doc. It’s the first sentence, outside of e-mails and tweets and notes I’ve written to myself, that has my name (and only my name) on both its front and back ends -- the first sentence I can look at and say with certainty, “I wrote that entire thing without help and without anyone else watching it get written.”
