Know your own strength | Learning with 'e's

Know your own strength | Learning with 'e's | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I broke a rowing machine yesterday at the gym. I don't know my own strength. Ironically, that's the very reason I attend the gym regularly. I want to know my own strength. I want to know what my limits are, and then try to exceed them. Apart from breaking the rowing machine, my fitness regime is going swimmingly (without the swimming, obvs). I have learnt a lot. I know about cross trainers, treadmills and weights. I thought a Dip Assist was someone telling me where to stick my Doritos*, until I discovered the weights area. And it was while I was working out at the gym this morning that this thought came to me: To know your own strengths, it's often wise to compete against yourself rather than anyone else.

Digital Badges in Higher Education White Paper - Google Docs

This paper explores the potential of digital badges in higher education. A digital badge is a clickable graphic that contains an online record of 1) an achievement, 2) the work required for the achievement, 3) evidence of such work, and 4) information about the organization, individual, or entity that issued the badge. Mozilla has created an Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) standard that includes a display platform called the Badge Backpack so that badge earners will have a free, hosted, public location for management and display of their digital badges. Thus, badges earned by individuals from disparate organizations that use custom badging platforms may be aggregated in one location for others to view.

5 Assessment Strategies Every Teacher Should Know

Most teachers and current textbooks offer varied approaches to the material to be learned so the teaching can be brain-compatible with the varied student learning styles. It is only logical that respect for these individual learning styles be incorporated into assessment forms.

For example, teachers responsive to interpersonal learning styles find cooperative group work a way to pull in those learners as well to give students with artistic, computer, dramatic, or organizational skills the opportunities to enter the learning experience through their strengths and interests. It follows that assessments should also provide opportunities for each student’s unique learning style to access his or her highest performance success level.

A variety of assessment forms and some student choice can bring students to the assessment with less anxiety and increase the positive learning experience as well as providing the opportunity for them to demonstrate what they know (as opposed to what they don’t know).

The Best Self-Assessment Questions for Encouraging a Growth Mindset

The Best Self-Assessment Questions for Encouraging a Growth Mindset | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There is no topic in education that is more furiously debated than assessment. Of course, self-assessment tends to raise even more alarm bells. The notion of students assessing themselves is difficult for many educators to get around, but they’re warming to the idea. If our students learn to ask the right self-assessment questions and keep themselves accountable, the results in learning improvement can be amazing.

The Death of Testing and the Rise of Learning Analytics

The Death of Testing and the Rise of Learning Analytics | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Some of us have assessed the situation, & the prognosis is not good for the test. We might be witnessing the death of testing.

I know that it is sad news for some, but more than a few of us have assessed the situation, and the prognosis is not good for our friend (or perhaps the arch enemy to others of us), the test. We might be witnessing the death of testing. Tests are not going away tomorrow or even next year, but their value will fade over the upcoming years until, finally, tests are, once and for all, a thing of the past. At least that is one possible future.
