Media and Information Literacy: creative and critical engagement across the curriculum and beyond #RBE2019 | Information Literacy Weblog: Slides | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Today I delivered a workshop Media and Information Literacy: creative and critical engagement across the curriculum and beyond university life at the Research-Based Education conference at the University of Adelaide, Australia, together with Bill Johnston. These are the slides.

This was the abstract: The aims of this workshop are: to unpack UNESCO’s “composite concept” of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and its relationship to research-based learning (RBL), and to stimulate participants to reflect on how MIL could enhance learning for citizenship.

Exploring people’s conceptions and experience of information literacy #REDMIL2018 | Information Literacy Weblog

This is my keynote presentation from the REDMIL doctoral summer school that I participated in last week at the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain la Neuve, Belgium, last week. My abstract was "Webber will start by outlining her research philosophy and contextualise this within her journey as a researcher. She will then summarise key aspects of phenomenographic and case study approaches: for example, appropriate types of research question for that approach, typical research design. Webber will finish by giving examples of information literacy research carried out using phenomenography or case study, focusing on studies undertaken in the Information School, University of Sheffield.

On Monday I gave a talk on MOOCs, Information Literacy and the role of the librarian at Edinburgh university on. The abstract for this was "Sheila Webber will start by briefly outlining some general characteristics of MOOCs and her own experience with them. She will go on to identify types of MOOC and the implications for MOOC pedagogy. As part of this discussion she will note some findings from an investigation into the value of learning analytics for MOOC educators (undertaken by Naomi Colhoun at Sheffield University in summer 2014). In the final part of her presentation she will reflect on the various roles that have been, or could be, adopted by librarians."

I was invited by KISK, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, to give a workshop to Masters students and a presentation as part of their Expert series. This is the presentation I gave on 27 November 2014. I will post my presentation for the Masters students on Monday. My abstract for my Expert talk was that I "argue that there is no need to invent a new literacy, just because people are making increasing use of digital media. Sheila outlines her perspective of a holistic information literacy that takes account of the blended information behaviour of today's citizens, sourcing information digitally, in print and through people and the environment

Report from #ecil2014 - Relating research and practice in Information Literacy | Information Literacy Weblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I just finished chairing a 90 minute panel on Relating research and practice in Information Literacy, which started with presentations by me, Bill Johnston, Louise Limberg, and Ola Pilerot and then had some time for discussion and questions. The presentations (in one document) are embedded below. Afterwards there were interesting points raised by the audience, mentioning barriers such as language (i.e. research being in different languages) and suggesting further studies such as investigating teh experience of people who were successfully conducting research in a practitioner context.

Information Literacy Weblog: Abstracting: flipped classroom?

Information Literacy Weblog: Abstracting: flipped classroom? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

On Tuesday I did sessions on abstracting with students here in the Information School, and as I was walking over to the first classroom it occurred to me that the way I was working could be called a flipped classroom. Since I posted the slidecast I used on Slideshare, I thought I would also share the activities that I did and then reflect on Flipped Classrooms.
Firstly, the activities. Students had been asked to view the slidecast, to read an article on information encountering and to take some notes on the article (prompted by questions like "what methods did the author use in her research").....

What's my approach? Deciding on the approach to use for your research #ecil2018 | Information Literacy Weblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This is the presentation that formed the introductory part of the workshop that Pamela McKinney and I gave at the European Conference on Information Literacy , in Oulu, Finland, on September 26 2018. The objectives of the workshop were:
"(1) To identify key characteristics of selected qualitative and mixed-methods research approaches, and to show what kinds of research questions and problems each approach is most suited to. The research approaches covered were: action research; case study; phenomenography; ethnography; autoethnography.
(2) To enable participants to understand the issues, advantages and disadvantages of different approaches, by looking at a practice-based information literacy problem, and asking participants to identify the implications of choosing one approach or another."

Institutional digital capability and digital fairy dust | Jisc digital capability codesign challenge blog

Institutional digital capability and digital fairy dust | Jisc digital capability codesign challenge blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

James Clay, Programme Manager at Jisc asked me to write a post for the their Developing Digital Capability blog on developing institutional digital capability.  It goes something like this:

. .. from your perspective what are the institutional enablers and blockers when it comes to growing the digital capability of an organisation?” asked James Clay in a recent post on this blog. I rather flippantly posted a comment to James’s post saying “Culture is a big issue, but I think over reliance (or expectations) that technology alone will somehow wave some magical digital fairy dust and everyone and ergo the institution will be “digital” and digitally literate.” This post is my attempt to elaborate that comment.

MOOCs and Information Literacy| Information Literacy Weblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This is the presentation part of the workshop I carried out with the students. In fact there is really more emphasis on thinking about library and information professionals roles in MOOCs than specifically "information literacy", but obviously developing or supporting information literacy in MOOCs are key activities for librarians. I start by talking about types of MOOC, and discuss pedagogy a little, and then provide some examples of possible LIS roles.
