Student evaluations of teaching are not only unreliable, they are significantly biased against female instructors. | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
A series of studies across countries and disciplines in higher education confirm that student evaluations of teaching (SET) are significantly correlated with instructor gender, with students regularly rating female instructors lower than male peers. Anne Boring, Kellie Ottoboni and Philip B. Stark argue the findings warrant serious attention in light of increasing pressure on universities to measure teaching effectiveness. Given the unreliability of the metric and the harmful impact these evaluations can have, universities should think carefully on the role of such evaluations in decision-making.

Every day, universities collect huge amounts of information about their students, ranging from grades and attendance, to library loans and virtual learning environment log-ins. Until now, however, most UK universities have not done much to bring those data together in a coherent way. It has been US and Australian institutions that have led the development of learning analytics: the use of such information to identify individuals who may be struggling and understand which teaching methods work best.

Proposing a sustainable Teaching Excellence Framework - Wonkhe

Proposing a sustainable Teaching Excellence Framework - Wonkhe | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As the Conservative Party conference gets under way and Green Paper expectations rise, much attention is focused on the principles and parameters of a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) for higher education.

This is an important opportunity, but not without risk. As the HE sector champion of teaching quality, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) is already supporting institutional, subject and individual trajectories towards excellence; indeed, this has been its core task for more than a decade. In addition to support, the HEA is in a position to mitigate potential risks associated with launching a TEF – for the government, funding bodies and institutions alike – if its advice is heeded in current political debates.
