Supporting student success: strategies for institutional change' is the final report to the What works? Student retention and success programme, a Paul Hamlyn Foundation initiative working with the Higher Education Academy, Action on Access and 13 UK universities across 43 discipline areas. The programme examined what works in terms of retention and success and, crucially, developed understanding about how to implement change.

Technology enhanced learning (TEL) is often used as a synonym for e-learning but can also be used to refer to technology enhanced classrooms and learning with technology, rather than just through technology.

As the Conservative Party conference gets under way and Green Paper expectations rise, much attention is focused on the principles and parameters of a Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) for higher education. This is an important opportunity, but not without risk. As the HE sector champion of teaching quality, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) is already supporting institutional, subject and individual trajectories towards excellence; indeed, this has been its core task for more than a decade. In addition to support, the HEA is in a position to mitigate potential risks associated with launching a TEF – for the government, funding bodies and institutions alike – if its advice is heeded in current political debates.

This report has been developed as part of our research project Flexible Pedagogies: preparing for the future. Technology-enhanced learning is one of five main focus strands embedded within the theme of flexible learning. It offers a summary and analysis of the current state of play, as well as recommendations for developing robust and appropriate flexible pedagogies with a view to influencing policy, future thinking and change within the rapidly-shifting landscape of learning and teaching in HE.

A new report published by The Higher Education Academy in the UK focusing on how e-learning (or technology-enhanced-learning) "may support flexible pedagogies, and so encompasses a range of topics where technology can enable new choices for learners."

The Higher Education Academy is funding a number of small projects for developing digital literacies through the disciplines. These projects have been selected to give a broad range of approaches which may help identify both common i.e. core themes and discipline-specific issues. This is intended to compliment the work our JISC partners have developed through the Digital Literacy programme.
