Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games

Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Janet is a student in a top university in Singapore. I had arranged to meet her to chat about her experience with classroom learning. We agreed on a cafe at Bugis called Mellower Coffee. One that is popular with students, she says.

Great! A new hangout.

I arrived and saw her at a corner. Plugged into earphones, she was engrossed in some videos. Youtube it seems. But this video was different. It looked like the video of a professor teaching in a class. But instead of being in a classroom, she is in a very nice cafe and having a nice coffee.

8 Principles Of Gamified Learning -

8 Principles Of Gamified Learning - | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As our society continues to evolve in response to the rapid changes brought on by universally accessible mass technology, the act of teaching (and the experience of learning) has been under significant pressure to adapt. Since the turn of the century, a number of approaches have been offered by scholars and practitioners to answer this challenge. One of them that I feel strongly is an essential part of the educator’s toolbox is gamified instruction.

Is education ready for gamification? - Daily Genius

Is education ready for gamification? - Daily Genius | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
gamification education

We’ve talked in the past on here about how gamification, in education may well be a key driver in the future, but there’s a very strong sense that it’s not fully formed yet.

So when will schools be ready for gamification? Do we understand what educationalists are trying to active when encouraging students to play to learn? There’s many people who will tell you that gamification is the future, not least because children like to play (obviously) and that energy can be used to create an system of teaching which gives instant rewards and feedback – usually doing so digitally.

Can Games Save Higher Education?

Can Games Save Higher Education? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In Minds on Fire: How Role Immersion Games Transform Colleges, Mark C. Carnes makes the case that they might. Students at Pace University have become so engrossed in a game called Henry VIII and the Reformation Parliament that class spills into the dorms: “students endlessly debated, gossiped, and strategized Tudor religion and politics.” At Dordt College, students playing Rousseau, Burke, and Revolution in France 1791, ask to begin class half an hour early so that they can complete the game. Every student attends the four early morning sessions.

Donald Clark Plan B: Does gamification play Pavlov with learners? DOs & DON'Ts

Donald Clark Plan B: Does gamification play Pavlov with learners? DOs & DON'Ts | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The massive success of online games led many to suggest that games and gamification, could be used to turbo-charge online learning. Take a little magic dust from gaming, sprinkle generously and we’ll all find it more fun, be more motivated and learn to love learning. But there’s pros and cons here, as it can both help and hinder learning. If gamification is simply scoring, bonuses and badges, the 21st century version of Pavlov's dogs, that would be a disappointment.
