Research report: The impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession

The purpose of this independent research is to help our professional community to understand how AI, machine learning, process automation and robotics are either already impacting the daily work of healthcare information professionals or likely to do so in the near future.

In it author Dr Andrew Cox from Sheffield University, calls for a joined-up and coherent response from information professionals, enabling us to maximise the benefits of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics for information users while mitigating the emerging risks.

The full research report, published by CILIP with the support of Health Education England, sets out a detailed and methodical analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by this new generation of technologies.

Diversity within the Profession - CILIP: the library and information association

Diversity within the Profession - CILIP: the library and information association | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
While I am delighted to be here, I have to admit that I thought long and hard about whether to accept the invitation to speak today. I am aware that we’ve heard a lot of voices like mine, that voices like mine can drown out other people's voices, and that really it is time for me, for us at CILIP to stop speaking and start listening.

But we also have to be accountable, to our members, to the profession, to society at large. We have to explain ourselves – not to dictate terms but to set out a commitment to change and to learn, and to listen.

Because all of us that hold leadership positions in this sector have to confront the fact that we are where we are because of a system of unseen privilege – a system which lifts some of us up while holding others down. The basis of that privilege is rightly being challenged. We are being challenged, rightly, to reflect on that privilege critically and to think about the impact it has on other people’s right to shape our profession.

As a profession, we aspire to universality – but we have to be critical about what ‘universal’ really means. I don’t want to be complicit in a system that promotes some voices at the expense of others.

Making the library the true heart of the school - SCIS

Making the library the true heart of the school - SCIS | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Caroline Roche, founder of the Heart of the School website, writes about the need to advocate for and share stories from school libraries — and what makes them the heart of the school.

That the library is the ‘heart of the school’ is a commonly accepted phrase nowadays, certainly in the United Kingdom. You see it in ads for a new librarian, you see it in tweets, you see it in newspaper articles, and it is even the title of the All Party Parliamentary Group white paper on school libraries: ‘The beating heart of the school’. But where does this phrase that is so ubiquitous now come from? Well, actually, I know. It is a phrase that fills me with pride, because it is the name of the website I set up seven years ago to celebrate the work of school librarians. You can visit the Heart of the School website and follow the Twitter feed @HeartOTSchool. There is also a Facebook page.

6 suggestions for teaching information literacy

6 suggestions for teaching information literacy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Most college students have been exposed to more technology than students of previous generations. This does not make them technology experts.  Students do a lot of searching online for information. This does not make them expert, or even good, searchers. Thanks to Google, students can always find information on any topic.  This does not mean that they have found true, accurate, useful information and does not make them expert finders of information. Students need instruction and guidance in learning how to find, evaluate, select and use information, just as they need instruction and guidance in learning anything else. They are not born "information literate" and frequent, uninstructed Googling will not make them so.

The CILIP Information Literacy Group (ILG) is offering up to £20,000 per year to fund practitioners (who are ILG members) through an annual bursary scheme. Bids of up to a £10,000 maximum are invited. Half the funding would be presented at the beginning of a project and the other half upon successful completion of measurable objectives. The principal investigator should be a practitioner ILG member, but the guidelines also suggest including an "experienced research" in the team (if the PI her/hiself is not already an experienced researcher.

We all rely on information every day and knowing how to find, understand and use it is vital. A key public good delivered by the library, information and knowledge management community, information literacy is a core activity of those working in schools, public libraries and in the commercial and government sectors.

The role of public pedagogy, open education and information literacy in a rapidly changing world: CILIPS 2020 keynote – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of giving the closing keynote to this year’s CILIPS conference. Like all conferences this year, it changed from a face to face meeting to an online conference. The conference team at CILIPS did a great job moving everything online. I was lucky enough to be able to dip in and out of the conference over the 2 days it ran. It was both inspiring and humbling to see some of the work that delegates shared.

In April 2018 at the LILAC Conference in Liverpool, the CILIP Information Literacy Group launched the revised definition of information literacy (IL). It defines IL as:

“...the ability to think critically and make judgements about any information we find and use. It empowers us as citizens to reach and express informed views and to engage with society.”

Reflective practice as a useful everyday tool

Reflective practice as a useful everyday tool | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I recently attended the CILIP New Professionals’ Day. It was my second time presenting at the event and this year I got to stay for the whole day, to enjoy the other presentations and chat to people.

At lunchtime I got chatting with Ross, who had been to my talk the previous year, about professional confidence and professional development. Our conversation turned to Chartership and reflective writing. Ross described how – as a naturally reflective person – the process of reflective writing for Chartership can seem a bit mechanical and arduous. He also described how many of us can feel uncomfortable with talking and writing about ourselves, it can feel a bit self-indulgent or navel-gazing. I understand all of these sentiments is because I have had exactly the same thoughts and have heard them from others. We discussed how I had found reflective practice practically useful in improving my practice.
