Introducing #DeepText: Facebook's text understanding engine

Introducing #DeepText: Facebook's text understanding engine | information analyst | Scoop.it

Text is a prevalent form of communication on Facebook. Understanding the various ways text is used on Facebook can help us improve people's experiences with our products, whether we're surfacing more of the content that people want to see or filtering out undesirable content like spam.

With this goal in mind, we built DeepText, a deep learning-based text understanding engine that can understand with near-human accuracy the textual content of several thousands posts per second, spanning more than 20 languages.

DeepText leverages several deep neural network architectures, including convolutional and recurrent neural nets, and can perform word-level and character-level based learning. We use FbLearner Flow and Torch for model training. Trained models are served with a click of a button through the FBLearner Predictor platform, which provides a scalable and reliable model distribution infrastructure. Facebook engineers can easily build new DeepText models through the self-serve architecture that DeepText provides. ...

Graphing New Yorkers' Lives Through the Open Data Portal

Graphing New Yorkers' Lives Through the Open Data Portal | information analyst | Scoop.it
The I Quant NY blog mines NYC's massive data clearinghouse to visualize issues facing city dwellers, from education to eating.

Ben Wellington is the man behind I Quant NY, a blog dedicated to telling the stories hidden in New York City’s Open Data Portal, a clearinghouse of more than 1,300 data sets from city agencies. Started by the city government in 2011, the open data initiative’s goal is to facilitate government transparency and increase civic engagement.

The blog itself comes out of a stats course Wellington teaches at Pratt Institute’s graduate program for city and regional planning, where he uses these data sets in coursework. Covering everything from gender divides in Citi Bike usage to finding the farthest point away from a Starbucks in Manhattan, Wellington’s larger mission is to get people thinking critically about the numbers that, if analyzed right, can be the key to understanding New York City.

He spoke to CityLab about his blog, his hope for the open data movement, and some of his favorite data sets.

Should You Make That Infographic?

Should You Make That Infographic? | information analyst | Scoop.it
Infographics and data visualization are more popular than ever these days, and on the flip side of this trend is the fact that for each amazing piece that gets published, there is at least one that… well, should never have seen the light of day.

Bad data visualizations can be misleading, confusing — or simply wrong.

Good ones, on the other hand, can be helpful, informative, or both — and fun, to boot.

So, we decided to create a little bit of that joy—and be a little meta—with a simple infographic about whether or not to make an infographic...

Nielson Report: What's Really Happening on Social Networks

Nielson Report: What's Really Happening on Social Networks | information analyst | Scoop.it

Interesting and very informative piece by Brian Solis for Social Media Today.

This is part 6 of a series of posts where Brian introduces his new Book The End of Business as Usual.

I must tell you that if you haven't gotten a copy of this book, you should, it is excellent, timely and relevant!

To paraphrase - social media is becoming part of our cultural fabric and even as we witness businesses, governments, sports teams, and almost every organization socialize communication efforts today,

****much of what we see is merely the beginning of something that will one day become something far more important than the medium itself.

****it is about how people are spending their time, interacting and connecting with one another, and what happens as a result.

To demonstrate the point, there are some profound findings from the recently released Nielsen Social Media Report.

So we’re running the world’s first global awards, celebrating excellence in data visualizations, infographics and information art. Yeah!

Kind sponsors Kantar have laid $30,000 on the table to reward the winners and celebrate the field.

Who are the judges?

Excitingly, we’re super-honoured to welcome Brian Eno to our judging panel. He joins senior curator at the MoMA Paola Antonelli, The Guardian Datablog’s editor Simon Rogers and um, myself David McCandless.
