Milestones timelineMilestone 1“Blood is a very unusual fluid”

Cláudio Nunes-Alves, Senior Editor, Nature Microbiology

2 December 2016 | doi:10.1038/ni.3600

Alfredo Corell's insight:

THE BIRTH OF IMMUNOLOGY:

The work of Behring and Kitasato not only proved that indeed “[b]lood is a very unusual fluid,” it also represented a major step in the discovery of antibodies, the development of effective human vaccines and the birth of immunology.

The altered landscape of the human skin microbiome in patients with primary immunodeficiencies

The altered landscape of the human skin microbiome in patients with primary immunodeficiencies | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it

This study examines differences in microbial colonization and community stability in PID skin and informs our understanding of host–microbiome interactions, suggesting a bidirectional dialogue between skin commensals and the host organism.

Fire with Fire: Girl, 7, 'cured' of leukemia after scientists turn her immune cells into 'guided missiles' to destroy the cancer

Fire with Fire: Girl, 7, 'cured' of leukemia after scientists turn her immune cells into 'guided missiles' to destroy the cancer | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it
Who would dare to pit one fatal disease against another… inside the body of a six-year-old patient? The results will shatter all expectations.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

ROSS KAUFFMAN

A seven-year-old girl has been 'cured' of leukaemia after a new therapy in which her T-cells — the immune system's killer cells — were bio-engineered to become 'guided missiles' to seek out and destroy the leukaemia, a new study shows.
