New London Architecture: 100 Ideas for Solving London's Housing Crisis

New London Architecture: 100 Ideas for Solving London's Housing Crisis | Immobilier | Scoop.it

With ideas ranging from floating homes to new mega-cities, New London Architecture has revealed 100 proposals to address the housing crisis in London. The ideas will be on display as part of the New Ideas for Housing exhibition at the NLA Galleries in the Building Centre in London. After an open ideas competition announced June 2015, over 200 entries were received with 10 finalists to be selected for the opportunity to work with the Greater London Authority to implement their ideas.

With so many entries, certain trends in thinking emerged. The retro-fitting of London suburbs, and the idea of giving homeowners greater responsibility was popular: Alastair Parvin and Adam Towle in partnership with the WikiHouse Foundation proposed the “Right to Replace,” which allows homeowners to replace their existing property with their dream home, if they use half their space, incentivizing density. Other ideas include apps that locate future development sites, and a ‘build-to-own’ financing and ownership model by Savills.

Casa Transportable house ÁPH80 by Ábaton

Casa Transportable house ÁPH80 by Ábaton | Immobilier | Scoop.it
Casa Transportable house ÁPH80 by Ábaton that fits on the back of a lorry and moved by road, with cement board walls and hinged panels.

Ábaton chose dimensions of nine by three metres to provide just enough space for two people and also allow the transportable house to be hoisted onto the back of a truck.

Externally the home is clad entirely in grey cement-board panels that hinge open to reveal sliding glass doors in the front and windows to the sides.

A Staircase With A Built-In Library, Garden, And Meeting Rooms

A Staircase With A Built-In Library, Garden, And Meeting Rooms | Immobilier | Scoop.it

In a typical office building, stairs tend to be strictly utilitarian: a way to get up and down and nothing more. When they’re windowless, cement-walled, and fluorescently lit, it’s not surprising that people end up taking the elevator.

But more architects are starting to pay more attention to staircases, whether it’s to deliberately encourage people to exercise, as in the Bullitt Center’s “irresistible stairway” in Seattle, or as a place to socialize, as in this new project in London.

Designed for a new office development in Soho, London, the “Living Staircase” has hidden rooms at each landing. “The office space will be rented to many different creative companies, so the central staircase feature creates the perfect opportunity for staff from different organizations to interact,” explains architect Paul Cocksedge
