If you are an open-minded person chances are you do not mind being
corrected by others. You embrace it and look forward to learning from their
experience. However, it is difficult to be open-minded all the time.

This is because of automatic negative thoughts all of us experience.

@Hannah Jacobs it is so important for us to remember to lead by example. I think it's important for students to see that teachers don't always get it right, but they're willing to work at it and keep making things better. A GROWTH Mindset is so important. Good luck on your teaching journey!
Matthew Smith's comment, June 2, 2017 8:50 AM
I don't think I can stress just how important it is to foster a growth mindset in our students. In a prior life, my firm (a market leader in superannuation) was undergoing massive structural and organisational change and reorganisation. As part of the process, a number of staff whose roles became redundant were laid off. Because they were an excellent employer, the company put staff on notice two years before the first round of layoffs were to occur, and offered upskilling and retraining to assist potentially affected staff to move into new areas of the business that were experiencing growth. Some jumped at the opportunity for change, whilst others, hampered by a fixed mindset, simply refused to adapt. When their roles became redundant (mostly through process improvement and automation), they were the first to go.

Great article for those who are "fighting" the growth mindset/standards grading idea. I love the idea of both, and this article does a nice job explaining not only why both lead to increased student achievement, but also uses the fixed mindset many have about math to explain why it works. Good, easy read.

How to Build a Growth Mindset into School Culture

How to Build a Growth Mindset into School Culture | iGeneration - 21st Century Education (Pedagogy & Digital Innovation) | Scoop.it
By Tiffany Della Vedova - How can we bring awareness to the gap between comprehension and practice to cultivate a growth mindset within our schools?
Erin Ryan's curator insight, October 23, 2015 5:38 PM

To encourage a growth mindset  teach flexibility, be adaptive, show excitement in learning (think  Where do I want to go? and How do I get there?), embrace failure and learning from mistakes. Learning is something that happens through us, not to us. As principals we need to model the growth mindset for our teacher and teachers for their students. What I find so difficult are those teachers who are truly unwilling to jump on board with new ideas- who believe that education should be the same as it has always been. These teachers with a fixed mindset, I'm finding, are the most challenging to work with.

Shelly Reckow VanVoorst's curator insight, October 25, 2015 4:17 PM

I scooped this article because it pertains to growth mindset, and it also presents the topic from the teacher perspective and also the student perspective.  This particular article breaks apart four different areas of growth mindset, and breaks it down.  I hope that teachers and students can read through this article, even if it's just parts of it at a time, and start to explore the idea of growth mindset, and how to cultivate their own mindset to that of growth.

The beauty of unfinished work (mindsets)

The beauty of unfinished work (mindsets) | iGeneration - 21st Century Education (Pedagogy & Digital Innovation) | Scoop.it
There is a danger in seeking finished perfection in all that we do. There
is a risk that our students will focus solely on the attributes that define
a finished piece and overlook the importance of the process that leads to
it. With a shift in our mindset we might be able to celebrate this process
and encourage our students to value the learning that occurs along the way.

Dweck's theory of Mindset - quick summary via teach it | iGeneration - 21st Century Education (Pedagogy & Digital Innovation) | Scoop.it
Carol Dweck offers a theory of Mindset. People can be classified into either Fixed or Growth Mindset states. People that possess a growth Mindset rise to challenges and learn from feedback on their mistakes. People's Mindsets can be changed, and it is possible to support people in the transition to a growth Mindset.
