As the Alliance Coordinator for the state of Rhode Island, I organized these three videos (two from National Geographic) and some pictures to provide a basis for understanding what geo-literacy is and why it is important for society and within the workforce. In the spirit of sharing, I thought I'd share these links beyond the borders of Rhode Island.

Many geography teachers bemoan the state of geography in education and I understand that frustration for more explicitly ‘geography’ courses; I also see this type of interdisciplinary activity as way to create a geography that is a part of all classrooms. So talk to an English teacher about a collaborative project–it just might get you somewhere.

Bridgewater State is home to the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance and home to Project Earthview (I've never been so jealous of a globe before). This inflatable, hand-painted globe in a fantastic teaching resource. You can even enter the globe with a group under 20 and explore the Earth from the inside out. The link is to the Earthview blog, with provides information of the project to take this globe to local schools, and other geographic resources. I’ve recently overhauled my other website http://geographyeducation.org in ways that will hopefully help teachers find specific resources for any given unit during the school year. I love this Scoop.it site for showing the latest materials that I’ve found. The “filter” function will also a teacher to search a specific topic as I’ve generated numerous “tags” to organize my posts. Still, if a teacher is searching for specific materials in a lesson on particular unit, there are many applicable “tags,” but they are arranged alphabetically. So I’ve added a drop-down tab entitled “thematic.” Under this drop-down menu are pages dedicated to all the units of AP Human Geography (and environmental and physical geography as well) with links for the pertinent sub themes organized by the AP Human Geography course outline. Additionally, I’ve included approximately 10 of my favorite resources for each unit to the corresponding page. I’ve also added a post slider where I’ll organize the most important posts of the last few weeks. Best of luck in the new school year!

It’s so often stated that geography education is so much more than just learning states and capitals. I wholeheartedly endorse that sentiment, but there is still some rudimentary importance to learning about where places are. I see it as analogous for English majors needing to learn basic grammar. You can’t write a masterpiece if you are still fumbling around with the alphabet. In geography, we can't have a nuanced discussion of place and interconnectedness if we have no sense of where any place actually is.

"Learning Geography was never this easy. With the interactive Ikaawland Map Quiz, You can put your trivia knowledge to test in our game based on Maps. Different levels are presented infront of a player. In the whole game, the player has to mark answers on World Map. "Real World Math: Using Google Earth in the Math Curriculum." Back to my interdisciplinary approach to strengthening geographic education, image hearing that there is a Math teacher at your school using this, wouldn't you want to be a part of it? Too often knowledge is taught within disciplinary silos; students need opportunities to make real world connections between the disciplines to breath life into how they are taught. As I've worked now with the Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance, I've had the good fortune to interact with the folks at National Geographic. They are preparing for Geography Awareness Week (Nov 11-17th) with the theme "Declare your Interdependence!" This newly released interactive feature allows students of all ages to see the global interconnections in their lives. By analyzing the items in our closets (or any of the items that we consume), we can easily see that our own personal geographies create a web of global interconnectedness.
