Prof. Thiago Bergler Bitencourt from the Food Engineering Department, Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul, Paraná - Brazil will be visiting BERG-IBB/IST-Alameda (room 7.6.4) from the 7th April to the 8th August. Thiago has a PhD in Organic Chemistry and is Assistant Professor, lecturing General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. His research interests focus on Applied Biocatalysis, with emphasis on lipase-based systems, and fermentation technology, namely on the valorization of agro-industrial wastes. During his stay at BERG-IBB Thiago will be working on the design and development of microreactors for application in biocatalysis.

Wageningen University PhD Students Visit IBB

Wageningen University PhD Students Visit IBB | iBB | Scoop.it

A group of 15 Ph. D. students and 3 staff members from the Bioprocessing Group of the University of Wageningen (NL) will be visiting IBB on the morning of the 23rd October, as part of their field trip to Portugal. A session will take place at the amphitheater of Complexo Interdisciplinar from 9 to 13 h where 2 PhD students from WU and 2 PhD students from IBB will have the opportunity to present their work. The students from WU will also have the opportunity to present their work in a dedicated poster session. All members of IBB are invited to participate (see program below and click on photo to go to Bioprocess Engineering @WU).

Prof. Gönül Schara from the Genetics and Bioengineering Department, Fatih University, Turkey will be visiting IST and BERG-IBB from the 9th to the 12th September. Gönül will be giving a workshop in Protein Bioengineering on the 10th (9-12 h) and 11th (9-12 h), room 5-LTI, 5th floor, Torre Sul. The following topics will be covered: Introduction to protein engineering and directed evolution. Protein structure modeling: Swiss Model and Pymol. Protein structure modeling: AutoDock. Furthermore, Gönül is interested in learning about the education activities carried out at IST and about the research being performed in the areas of Molecular Bioengineering.

ASM Embassador Visits iBB

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to more than 39,000 members today, with more than one third located outside the United States. The members represent 26 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators.

On Feb. 21, Tuesday, iBB will receive the visit of Dr. Diogo Proenca, Young Ambassador of Portugal to the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The visit will include a presentation (14:30 H, meeting room 9th floor, South Tower) in which Dr. Proença will publicize the activities of the ASM and describe the advantages of being a member.

"Professor Mark van Loosdrecht, leader from the Environmental Biotechnology Group of TUDelft, visited the Environmental Biotechnology Lab of iBB on September 26 in the context of the collaboration established with Doctor Nídia Lourenço, principal investigator of the FCT-funded BIOTEXTILE project (PTDC/EBB-BIO/120624/2010). The project aims to assess the applicability of Aerobic Granular Sludge technology for dye-laden textile wastewater treatment and Mark van Loosdrecht is the inventor of this technology, which is already considered the next generation of wastewater biotreatment processes. Van Loosdrecht has received numerous awards, both from academia and industry, including the 2014 Spinoza Prize from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the highest scientific distinction in the Netherlands. He is interested in extending the collaboration with iBB and he is currently co-supervising one MSc student with Nídia Lourenço and one PhD student with Nídia Lourenço and Helena Pinheiro. "

Francisco is interested in learning about the education activities carried out at IST and about the research being performed in the areas of Wastewater treatment, Anaerobic digestion, Biosolid treatment and Biotreatment of contaminated gas streams.
