The takeaways from Stanford's 386-page report on the state of AI

The takeaways from Stanford's 386-page report on the state of AI | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it
Writing a report on the state of AI must feel like building on shifting sands: by the time you publish, the industry has changed under your feet.

Let us just bullet the highest-level takeaways: AI development has flipped over the last decade from academia-led to industry-led, by a large margin, and this shows no sign of changing. It’s becoming difficult to test models on traditional benchmarks and a new paradigm may be needed here. The energy footprint of AI training and use is becoming considerable, but we have yet to see how it may add efficiencies elsewhere. The number of “AI incidents and controversies” has increased by a factor of 26 since 2012, which actually seems a bit low. AI-related skills and job postings are increasing, but not as fast as you’d think. Policymakers, however, are falling over themselves trying to write a definitive AI bill, a fool’s errand if there ever was one. Investment has temporarily stalled, but that’s after an astronomic increase over the last decade. More than 70% of Chinese, Saudi, and Indian respondents felt AI had more benefits than drawbacks. Americans? 35%.

RLUK publishes report on the role of research libraries in the production of scholarly research

The role of academic and research libraries as active participants and leaders in the production of scholarly research

Research Libraries UK is delighted to publish the results of a major research project exploring the role, and potential role, of research and academic libraries as partners in, and leaders of, research.

Commissioned by RLUK, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and delivered by research consultancy Evidence Base, the report takes an inclusive definition of libraries, which includes archives, special collections, museums and galleries. The report provides a detailed overview of the current role of academic and research libraries as partners and leaders of research, their potential to enhance these roles, and the barriers they might face in doing so. The report has 10 headline findings and makes 13 far-reaching recommendations for libraries, members of the academic community, parent organisations, RLUK, and the AHRC.

[PDF] Trust in Artificial Intelligence: A global study

[PDF] Trust in Artificial Intelligence: A global study | Help and Support everybody around the world | Scoop.it

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous part of everyday life and work. AI is enabling rapid innovation that is transforming the way work is done and how services are delivered. For example, generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are having a profound impact. Given the many potential and realised benefits for people, organisations and society, investment in AI continues to grow across all sectors, with organizations leveraging AI capabilities to improve predictions, optimise products and services, augment innovation, enhance productivity and efficiency, and lower costs, amongst other beneficial applications.

However, the use of AI also poses risks and challenges, raising concerns about whether AI systems (inclusive of data, algorithms and applications) are worthy of trust. These concerns have been fuelled by high profile cases of AI use that were biased, discriminatory, manipulative, unlawful, or violated human
rights. Realising the benefits AI offers and the return on investment in these technologies requires maintaining the public’s trust: people need to be confident.

AI is being developed and used in a responsible and trustworthy manner. Sustained acceptance and adoption of AI in society are founded on this trust. This research is the first to take a deep dive examination into the public’s trust and attitudes towards the use of AI, and expectations of the management and governance of AI across the globe.

We surveyed over 17,000 people from 17 countries covering all global regions: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States of America (USA). These countries are leaders in AI activity and readiness within their region. Each country sample is nationally representative of the population based on age, gender, and regional distribution.

This year, that sense of segmented realities has moved from the margins to the mainstream. An accurate vision of the future is now less like looking through a telescope, more like looking through a kaleidoscope: it’s coming through as several diverse fragments, not one single perspective.

A majority worries that the evolution of artificial intelligence by 2030 will continue to be primarily focused on optimizing profits and social control. They also cite the difficulty of achieving consensus about ethics. Many who expect progress say it is not likely within the next decade. Still, a portion celebrate coming AI breakthroughs that will improve life

Research report: The impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession

The purpose of this independent research is to help our professional community to understand how AI, machine learning, process automation and robotics are either already impacting the daily work of healthcare information professionals or likely to do so in the near future.

In it author Dr Andrew Cox from Sheffield University, calls for a joined-up and coherent response from information professionals, enabling us to maximise the benefits of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics for information users while mitigating the emerging risks.

The full research report, published by CILIP with the support of Health Education England, sets out a detailed and methodical analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by this new generation of technologies.
