Save The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus

Save The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
Information about the endangered Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus and what you can do to save it.

So many of our student passively accept what they read on the internet as truth, especially if the website looks professional.  Since we are trying to help foster critical-thinking skills, we can present this website as though it were factual and encourage our students to analyze, critique and evaluate the 'information' presented.  Personally, I wish I lived in a world where the Tree Octopus was safe to freely climb in the old-growth forests.

Here is the link for this week's best of twitter teacher resources.

This is a fabulous list of educational resources on Google Docs (with a strong emphasis on history and social studies).  This also demonstrates how one educator has harnessed the power of twitter as a source of professional development and educational networking.  All of these links were compiled during one week by one teacher; just think about possibilities when digital curation becomes collaborative!

AAG: Changing Planet

AAG: Changing Planet | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it

The Association of American Geographers (AAG) is now Beta-testing a new website to address some of the issues from the NRC report, “Understanding the Changing Planet, Strategic Directions for the Geographical Sciences.” This site, builds on the idea that geographers can communicate truth in ways that other disciplines don’t offer, or “the geographic advantage.”

The four aspects the geographic advantage (as conceptualized by the AAG team) are:

1.  Relationships between people and the environment

2.  Importance of spatial variability

3.  Processes operating an multiple and interlocking geographic scales

4.  The integration of spatial and temporal analysis

To ensure that this advantage is harnessed, the AAG prepared 11 modules within these 4 categories of key issue facing the world:

--Environmental Change

--Sustainability

--Rapid Spatial Reorganization

--Technological Change

The site is still under construction and will face some alterations. The AAG will provide beta-testers with a CD-ROM (Teachers Guide to Modern Geography) and select one module that you will fully explore. If you would like to be a beta-tester, sign up at: http://tinyurl.com/geoadvbeta

More pedagogic change in 10 years than last 1000 years

Search, links, media sharing, social media, Wikipedia, games, open source etc. are ground breaking shifts in the way we learn, says Donald Clark. Unfortunate...

This TED talk highlights the shift changes that are revolutionizing educational practices.  Transformations is communication technologies has freed education from both spatial and temporal constraints of the past.  Social media technologies has made numerous shifts that some educators have resisted.  Donald Clark ends the talk with this poignant ending: "You can ignore it, but resistance is futile."

TED-Ed Hits the Classroom with New Video Website

TED-Ed Hits the Classroom with New Video Website | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
The innovative minds at TED have brought a new educational video website to the head of the class. Today, TED-Ed launched http://ed.ted.com, a site that features TED-Ed’s original K-12 animated videos with accompanying lessons and quizzes.

I'm incredibly excited about this announcement.  I've included a few TED-Ed link on my site http://www.scoop.it/t/geography-education and will continue to do so.  Khan Academy is not alone as a major free website that is producing great videos for educational purposes.  TED-Ed also has lesson materials at can be customized to your particular classroom needs.
