In China, one-child policy compounds loss of child for parents

In China, one-child policy compounds loss of child for parents | GTAV AC:G Y10 - Geographies of human wellbeing | Scoop.it
One-child policy leaves some parents childless, hopeless and facing financial ruin in old age.
Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:

CD - The role of international and national government and non-government organisations’ initiatives in improving human wellbeing in Australia and other countries.

Population programs can have have diverse unintended consequences.  Many couples in China who have lost a child not only face the heartache of loss, but have also lost their economic future since that one child was supposed to support them in their old age.  Some elderly parents have a child, but one that does not financially support them as the cultural norms of the past would have required of the children.  These 'orphan grandparents' are casualties in the changing cultural, demographic, and economic patterns in China.

7 Billion: How Did We Get So Big So Fast?

Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:

CD - The different ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing and development, and how these can be applied to measure differences between places.

CD - The reasons for spatial variations between countries in selected indicators of  human wellbeing.

It was just over two centuries ago that the global population was 1 billion — in 1804. But better medicine and improved agriculture resulted in higher life expectancy for children, dramatically increasing the world population, especially in the West.

As higher standards of living and better health care are reaching more parts of the world, the rates of fertility — and population growth — have started to slow down, though the population will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

U.N. forecasts suggest the world population could hit a peak of 10.1 billion by 2100 before beginning to decline. But exact numbers are hard to come by — just small variations in fertility rates could mean a population of 15 billion by the end of the century.
