Fra le manifestazioni carnevalesche, molto antiche troviamo  Ivrea, in Piemonte, dove da più di due secoli si festeggia lo Storico Carnevale.

Istitutito nel 1808, lo Storico Carnevale di Ivrea ha mantenuto un forte legame con il Medioevo, epoca in cui questa festa nasce: ne sono un esempio i carri allegorici e le cerimonie che vengono portate avanti durante questi giorni di festa, fortemente attaccate alla tradizione e ricche di evocazioni storiche.

Cerimonia folcloristica per eccellenza, che richiama turisti da ogni parte per assistere allo spettacolo, è la cosidetta Battaglia delle arance, ormai simbolo chiave del Carnevale di Ivrea [..]

Dressed up as middle ages kings' guards, a group of men ride in a horsedrawn carriage and pelt 'foot soldiers' with oranges as thousands of people gather to re-enact the battle when the townsfolk of the Piedmontese town of Ivrea near Turin overthrew an evil king. In a strange twist, instead of swords and crossbows, these days the weapons of choice are oranges
