Ancona: Caves of the Passetto

Ancona: Caves of the Passetto | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Since ancient times men have made numerous shelters for boats digging at the base of the cliff. These are caves of fishermen, a peculiarity of the area , the expression of a particular way of life at sea. They were dug by the farmers and fishermen who lived in the upper part of the cliff . It has continued to dig in the last 200 years, to occupy even the most straight stretches of the coast most exposed to waves.
One of the oldest caves in the Passetto is the cave of Bevilacqua . It was dug by the grandfather of Ugo Bevilacqua, Mr. Luigi, towards the end of 1800 in the safe cove sheltered from the winds and storm surges.
The cave was originally excavated in the rock with a pickaxe for about a length of 6.00 meters and a width of 3.50 meters. To protect the entrance from frequent rockfall from the cliff above , was coated to a certain depth with a barrel vault of brick, reinforced by an arch at the entrance with two heads. The floor has a slight slope to facilitate the descent of the boats at sea .
The boats are made to slip on the greased wooden planks resting on the ground called ” planks “. In 1939 the cave was extended into the interior of approximately 4.50 meters using small explosive charges. From that time to now, the cave has not changed even in the tools and objects that have remained the same he used his father. Mr. Bevilacqua walked down to the cave using the old dirt road , on average, twice a day. [...]

Ancona and the Cardeto Park | Seeking Science along the Adriatic Coast - Part 6

Ancona and the Cardeto Park | Seeking Science along the Adriatic Coast - Part 6 | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

I had part of a day to spend in Ancona, an Italian port city on the Adriatic Sea. Ancona does not appear in many guide books, perhaps because the authors think it has little touristic interest. Yet, right across the street from my hotel, I discovered an entrance to Parco del Cardeto, the largest urban reserve park in Ancona, officially opened in 2005. This 35-hectare park consists of the beach and cliffs along the Adriatic coast from Ancona’s port and old town section towards the south.

As you wander through the park, strategically-placed signage gives you hints about the human and natural history of the area. The cliffs consist of Miocene marl, 17 million year old sea shells mixed with clay and volcanic ash. And just like in our Rocky Mountains, the layering of the sediments exposes rock of varying permeability, causing plants to grow differentially.

The prevalence of wild thistle in the park has been a source of controversy. Silybum marianum grows wild and is a major food source for the goldfinch. As the thistles are replaced with short landscaped grasses, the abundance of the finch decreases, leading to a debate in how best to keep the park natural yet enjoyable. As a side note to this, the milk of this wild thistle was used in mediaeval times to deal with problems of the liver and urine retention. Amazingly, now the milk is of some pharmacological interest in the production of medications related to control of hypertension.

There is a great deal more of interest in this park. It was obvious to me that people have been accessing this beach long before it was a protected park. Caves dug over the centuries by fishermen are in still in use today. The plankton at the base of the marine food system leads to an abundance of harvest from the sea. I only had a couple of hours to explore this area, and would like to return.

"I’m at Schiphol airport right now, and about to leave for Italy! I’m taking a few days off for a quick visit to Ancona."

Ancona is a city and seaport in the Marche region of Italy. Ancona was founded by Greek settlers from Syracuse about 387 BC. When it became a Roman colony is doubtful. It was occupied as a naval station in the Illyrian War of 178 BC. Julius Caesar took possession of it immediately after crossing the Rubicon. Its harbour was of considerable importance in imperial times.

Nature in all her dazzling beauty: Stunning new landscape photos capture the breath-taking countryside of Le Marche
Italian photographer Alessio Andreani captured beautiful shots of the European landscapes for a series of images
The 25-year-old says he often had 'only a few seconds' to capture the shot he wanted as the sun rose or went down
From the crisp, snow clad mountains to vivid bright blue seas, these breath-taking photographs capture the raw and arresting beauty of the natural landscape.
With subjects ranging from the morning sunrise to the dazzling night sky, the images - all of which were taken in France and Italy - catch these calm and tranquil settings in all their glory.
This picture, showing the Sibillini Mountains in Italy, was taken by photographer Alessio Andreani as part of a series of landscape shots taken throughout France and Italy
The awe-inspiring shots, taken throughout 2012, also manage to display the changing colours of the mountains and lakes, from oranges to yellows and purples to blues.
Mr Andreani, 25, who is from Italy, says he feels a 'strong link with the land where I live'.
He added: 'The sun has a massive impact on how the photographs will turn out; it is like one big flame of light.
'Whilst photographing a lot of these images, I had only a few seconds to get the exact capture I needed, as the sun moves so quickly at sunrise.'
The stunning photographs of greenery were taken in the town of Castelluccio di Norcia and in the hills near Recanati in Italy, showing the landscape off to its best advantage.
Mr Andreani, who was born in Loreto, said: 'Taking these photographs of the vast countryside was very relaxing for me; I was able to just walk and enjoy the moment.'
The images of the calm and eerie night sky were also taken in Italy in Mount Argentella and capture the Milky Way above the same town.
Mr Andreani added: 'It was very quiet during the taking of these photographs, and because there was no moon, there were only the stars to light up the sky, making it seem so dark.'
In stark contrast to the pictures taken at night are the shots showing the precise moments of sunrise, which were taken at various places including Monte Conero and Tellaro in Italy, and Cannes in France.

Le Marche Legend of Calcio: Roberto Mancini

Le Marche Legend of Calcio: Roberto Mancini | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Roberto Mancini was born 27th November 1964 in the town of Jesi, of the Province of Ancona, in Le Marche Region.
This small town in central Italy was the place which saw Roberto first fall in love with the beautiful game.
As a boy, his only two interests were football and religion. He was a committed Roman Catholic, and as such honoured his faith by being an altar boy at his local place ofworship, the church of San Sebastian.
His football club Aurora Calcio was next door, and a young Roberto Mancini was often found training or playing games there during the early seventies.
His two passions once famously clashed when Roberto left midway through his First Holy Communion to join his teammates for their Sunday fixture. The initial reaction of his family was dismay, until the priest conducting affairs informed them it was he who instructed the young Mancini to get his boots, as his team was 2-0 down.
These were the humble beginnings of a man who would go on to make over 500 appearances in Serie A, inspiring Sampdoria to domestic and European glory, something they hadn't achieved before, and haven't since.
Bologna were the first to see Mancini's talent and signed him at the age offourteen. He was handed his debut at the age of sixteen in September of 1981. Mancini scored nine goals in thirty-one appearances for the Rossobù), although his first season proved to be his last.
Sampdoria saw something special in the young forward and brought him to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in the summer of1982. Little did they knowjust what great success he would bring with him....

Her bold and sporty exterior styling come from Andrea Vallicelli while interior design is by design team Nuvolari Leonard. Silver Wind accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms. Notable outdoor living spaces include her spacious sun deck and spacious beach area and swim platform.
The new ISA 140 features a hybrid propulsion developed by Siemens and ISA. This allows her to top out at 32 knots and cruise 26 under traditional propulsion, powered by twin diesel engines driving Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets through reduction gearboxes, while also being able to run at low speeds of eight knots with the main engines switched off. Ancona 1914, si scatena la protesta - La Settimana Rossa | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it
