5 Myths About Landing Your First Job or Internship
BostInno (blog)
As a recent college grad, I'm all too familiar with the painful process of landing your first gig.
Trish Sadar's insight:

This article is spot on!

The difference between how you approach a college interview vs. a job interview:

Approach to colleges should be to achieve the best grades, showcase varied hobbies and interests, and to be a well-rounded interesting human being.

Applying to jobs is different. Its not about showcasing how great you are and the long list of ways you are interesting.  What the employer wants to know is ..... What can you do for us?  Are you a right fit?  How much value can you add to the position, the department, and the company?

What to do when networking isn't working - Fortune Management

What to do when networking isn't working - Fortune Management | Job Advice - on Getting Hired | Scoop.it
For those who send out plenty of networking emails and phone calls only to hear nothing but silence, the question isn’t why they should network, but how. A few things to consider.
Trish Sadar's insight:

The article covers how to network and reminds everyone the importance of networking:

"Networking continues to be the most effective way to find a new job, beating out social networking sites like LinkedIn (LNKD) and Internet job search engines like Indeed.com." Based on a report that was conducted a few years ago.

Please read the article that is filled with stories, advice, and tips. I believe that you should have a goal in mind for each person you reach out to. That means you need to think...what does success look like, and what will I ask this person to do for me.When meeting with a potential connection, ask the person if it is okay to send your resume to them. If they could pass along to the hiring manager, or to the department for that appropriate area, you would be grateful.

When you ask for permission, and are specific regarding what you are asking them to do, your chances of getting your resume passed along increases. When you do follow up by sending your resume, thank them again for helping you!

People are busy, and you may not get a response. That is okay, all you can do is make connections and do what is within your control. Please share with us your success stories...we would love to hear from you!

Life as we know it is over when starting a career as a single parent. I know now that I will be running like a headless chicken. Although i am excited to get a job, i am frighten that I will be forced to grow up, make dinner for the family, pay bills, and be in charge of making life function properly for my family. I believe that it starts at home, if you are happy at home then the work life should fall right into place. i try to stay positive, so that i can have that smile on at all times while out serving in the hospitality field. Lastly it is very important to stay healthy inside and out of the work place.

The things said in this video are very very important things to know. Life changing things that can make you a better person and make make you find the right career that you will love. I have always felt as if I needed to be a nurse, because nursing was big in my family, but for me nursing was very boring. and i could not stand to be in a hospital or around sick people, and even though i choose to go to school for hospitality management mentally i still think about being a nurse and how great it will make my mother feel. But after this video i no longer feel bad for wanting to work in a career that best suites me.

Trish Sadar's insight:

I know that you have heard this before; however, so many people either forget to send the thank you letter or send out after the hiring decision has been made.

I have to tell you, when the hiring decision has come down to a couple of equally talented individuals -- often the thank you letter sealed the deal for the person who demonstrated their motivation, interest, and follow through.

My advice:  Already have the stamp on the envelope the day you are interviewing and write that day!  Email thank you letters are nice; however, letters sent in the mail make an even bigger impact!

Internships importance shown in job market : FIUSM

60% of all 2012 college interns received at least one job offer after completing their internship. http://t.co/jJ7kFxt2
Trish Sadar's insight:

You are probably tired of hearing it from me.....

Great Article -- In all of my talks, articles, blogs and books - interships --- the ingredient to getting hired when you graduate.

The article says:

Study hard. Network harder.Graduate high school. Go to college. Get your dream job. This is the typical career path for most University students envision. What many are missing, however, is the internship milestone — the linking device between an academic and professional career."

Makes sense -- most companies won't hire you if you don't have experience, hence internships are ways to demonstrate your work ethic, gain experience, and build your career path.  The goal is when you graduate you have the education and the experience the employers are seeking.

If you play your cards right, the employer will snatch you right up as a full time employee following your internship.
