GetAtMe Blogram So urban radio has replaced RNB with Trap Rap? ... #ItsAboutTheMusic | GetAtMe | Scoop.it

Mya has made the statement, “radio has replaced RNB music with trap rap (which really aint true…).  Rihanna’s WORK is not trap rap.  Drake’s ONE DANCE is not trap rap.  The WeekNd CANT FEEL MY FACE is not trap rap.  Beyonce’s SORRY is not trap rap.  Bryson Tiller’s EXCHANGE is not trap rap.  So this statement really confuses me (is she even listening to urban radio?).  Now what has happened is that there has been a synthesis of RNB/HipHop (which this generation embraces) and there is some Rap on radio.  Actually there is very little trap rap on urban radio as a whole nationally.  What urban radio does do is play trending hit records (which is their purpose along with selling ad space).

Urban radio’s mission is to provide trending music that draw listeners for advertisers.  The RNB that’s selling, urban radio plays.  Urban radio’s mission is to play the hits (and sell ads), not break the hits (which won’t help sell ads).  For some reason today’s RNB artist don’t get that.  They play plenty of RNB on Urban AC but believe me, urban AC bills in ad revenue, nowhere near what urban hiphop/ rhythmic stations bills in ad revenue (they are in the business of making money and you really can’t deposit bragging rights.).  If RNB artist want more airplay on hit urban radio, then RNB fans need to buy more music on iTunes as opposed to listening to free music on Spotify (indirectly urban radio’s major competitor for today buying ears).  It’s that simple.  Really it is.
