From Wolfman Jack, Dr Dre and Dj Magic Mike, dj’s have at times been the artist who had the hit singles. Many of Magic Mike’s cuts are dj ('Vicious Bass’) classics to this day. Recently Dj Khaled, Dj Luke Nasty and other djs have wandered into the market and are using their mixtape fame to themselves become stars (what’s crazy is that there are some djs who are not feeling this at all…).
Dj Khaled’s formula of loading up one of his albums with stars is a tried and true way in the mixtape game, now will that system work in today’s online sales market (judging by Khaled’s numbers, it seems that the verdict is in. It works). Dj’s like Mark Ronson, and Calvin Harris have already been successful at this. Dj Snake and Lil John’s ‘TURN DOWN FOR WHAT’ was a huge success. So now, will the djs become real artist competition in the sales market? Is this a new way for Dj’s to better monetize themselves (we’ll see…)
At the end of the day all businesses evolve (or they die to innovation on technology) and this is just the evolution from mixtapes being influencers to the mixtape djs becoming viable worldwide performers with hit records. It was just a matter of time…
I’m ReggieRedd and there’s nothing wrong with the record business that a good record can’t handle…
