“Thank You” Busta Rhymes ft Q-Tip, Kanye West, Lil Wayne
Now no one can say they thought Young Money would have ever done this (#Really). This is clearly a New York record (and it may work for New Yorkers). First of all, I’m a Buster fans and it’s hard for me not to like a Buster record ( there I said it) so I’m biased. I like this record. This is a great club record for the Urban Nights crowd. The pretty people are going to love this song but I’m not sure the streets are going to understand this rsong. You gotta really love and understand hip hop to appreciate this record, but maybe hip hop need to understand that hip hop has a new generation that has its own likes and needs (I mean people loved the Lindy Hop during its days and the Roger Rabbit as a dance).
I like this song. All these guys are great on this. The performance, the beat, the hook, but what I hope I’m not hearing is the arrogance of old hip hoppers not respecting a new generations ideas and dreams (remember Q-Tip, hip hop wasn’t initially received with open arms from the music industry R&B executives.). If this was” we’re just trying to do a great song”, cool. If this was a stealth attempt to straighten the likes of a Kendrick Lamar or a Trinidad James for their statements, remember guys the fans, not you have the final say at the sales counter.
This is a great record. I just hope this isn’t the last stand for “GrandPa Rap”. You guys are great, respect the fans from all the generation (realtalk). Other than that, I love this record. Here’s the Marketview:
THE STREETS- 3($$$) this is a great record in the streets of New York but there’s more to the market than New York…..
MIXTAPES- 3($$$) same thing here, great in New York but in other markets, ???????
THE CLUBS- 4($$$$) real dj’s are gonna love this song but will plays in the club translate into sales?.........
RADIO- 3($$$) radio’s gonna put this one in cruise control. If the streets love it they’ll bang it out. If not they’ll give it a 4 week window……..
BUZZ- 2(ZZ) it’s a creeper, probably stronger in a few weeks….
THE WILDCARD- 5($$$$$) the wildcard on this song is the performances and the lyrics. These guys got down (but wait aren’t they supposed to, I mean it is Kanye West #ImJustSayin)…
TOTAL- 20pts out of 30pts( grade B) The wild card saved this ranking, why because these guys are supposed to do a great song, now let see if it will be a great hit (for all generation not just their crew)
Now this is the Mimi we know and love. I like this cut. It’s a simple cut but the impact is nice. What I really like about this cut is that it’s selling (some of ya’ll really need to take note of this). It’s already up to 4123 single sales online for this week. That’s right limited airplay (if any), no video, just YouTube (and the YouTube kids doing the accapella youtube vids). You see, sales are the final judge and jury in this business. Mariah has a great song, check it out.. Here’s the MarketView:
STREETS- 3($$$) right now the buzz is the kids making accapella videos (probably the best indicator of a potential hit)……
MIXTAPE- 2($$) this one will be on the R&B mixes
CLUBS- 2($$) An EDM mix will blow this thing out….
RADIO- 4($$$$) radio should love this one but it will have to prove itself (especially to Urban Radio Where’s Steve Harvey on this one….
BUZZ- 3($$$) this score comes from the over 4000 single sold this week. That’s the real buzz for me….
TOTAL- 14pts out of 25 pts( grade C+) Don’t be fooled by this grade, I love this song (and the fans will also). This song is a hit. In today’s market path although it will have to climb on it’s own but it can make moves that matter.

WingzOnaPlane, the New Orleans rapper that Hurricane Katrina relocated to Atlanta. Now that he"s here in Atlanta to stay, he"s put together his mixtape "Wake Em Up". This 3pc snack ft Duece Poppi on "Just Fly" (Wingz and Duece make a viable pair on this track. Wingz set's it up with his machine gun style and Duece comes in and really rides it out). Good music. "Mind Control", one of Wingz most conscience track is Wingz's showing us that he can entertain and edutain. "This Must Be the Life" is a laid back groove that Wingz and Jeese James do their thing on. A great 3 songs for this new artist. #Enjoy
DiaryOfAHitMan “You’re managers most important job is to find you a hit”
I’mma say this one time and I’m through with it. All this other so called bullshit some managers be doing (so called networking, idol building or whatever), their one and only real priority is to find you, the artist a hit.(period point blank).
Many new artist and writers want a shot (no problem). The problem becomes when someone invest their time and money. At the point that time and money are invested, then the situation becomes a business venture and the music business is definitely a music venture.
Managers are very important to this process. Some managers like to flex money. Other managers like to groom artist (I know right). Some mangers are good guys that have a business head and they want to be involved in something that’s growing. But I’m here to tell you right know, you’re job as manager is to find your artist a hit.
This is the music business, not the artist business and this business is fueled by a hit song (Yankee Doodle, My Way, Whoop There It Is.. you get the picture). This business takes catchy music and markets it to people who like catchy music. Period. The artist developes fans and friends but the buck stops unless you have a hit song.
Many artist somehow have developed the impression that if I can get someone to mess up enough money and they elevate me to a level of exposure that no one can miss me, then I will be a star (the internet has really contributed to this type of marketing foolishness). I mean we have a show called LoveAndHipHop that the artist on LoveAndHipHop are selling nothing. K Michelle is trying (and she’s talented) but no matter how many time we see her we’re still waiting for that smash song from her.
I love Rihanna’s people, why because they don’t bullshit around. They don’t play favorites with writers (somebody’s cousin or the artists homeboy bullshit) they go find her hit. Not just hits but SMASHES and they don’t miss. You see that kind of consistency starts with the manager. The manager first job is to make you a success (in spite of how you feel as an artist), because if you don’t succeed then money and time has been wasted. No hit, no money.
It’s great to have chemistry as an artist. It’s great to be the most talented musician around. It’s great to have all the rhyme skills in the universe. It’s great to have enough money to raise your exposure but until you find that hit song, you’re gonna come up short.

Ja Rule “Fresh Out The Pen”
Alright this is one that many wanted to see what’s up. Ja Rule has dropped this one and it’s entitled “Fresh Out The Pen.” Well this certainly’s not the Ja Rule that was teamed up with Ashanti. This Ja Rule has a chip on his shoulder and wants everyone to know it.
Ja Rule’s power was as a pop phenom so it’s going to be interesting to see where he goes with this rougher and tougher Ja Rule. Here’s the stats:
THE TRACK- 4($$$$) This beat is cool (more of a mixtape beat)
THE PERFORMANCE- 4($$$$) ja Rule sound’s more like he came from No Limit on this one as opposed to Murder Inc….
MUSCLE- 2($$) it gonna need muscle to get up the hill (a lot). Ja will create a lot of interest but in this market, interest last for about 3 weeks….
JUICE- 2($$) radio will definitely be in a wait and see mode….
LYRICS- 3($$$) man I heard a lot of No Limit references (#LSMH). These lyrics had jailhouse practice all over it. Ja Rule pulled it off…
TIMING- 2($$) Ja Rule’s return is news worthy (for the media) the question is will it be relevant to this new generation of fans
TOTAL- 17pts out of 30pts (grade C+) everyone will check this one out. So we’ll see…….
I’m ReggieRedd and this one’s #InTherate (I’ll have to see what the fans say)

This T Pain is hot. I was sort of caught off with this, I really didn’t know what this was gonna be but I will tell you this, Its official. Here’s the stats:
THE TRACK- 4($$$$) this track rides. This is a T Pain track
THE PERFORMANCE- 3($$$) these guys did their thing. They both rode the track
MUSCLE- 2($$) these guys are gonna need help in the streets. The clubs might not be enough to bring this one in
JUICE- 2($$) radio will be reactive to this one. Hurry up and wait
TIMING- 2($$) nothing special about this drop time. I guess they’re hoping for traction 4th quarter (Christmas)
VIDEO- 1($) why do these guys put so much effort in doing these still videos by marketing groups as opposed to just doing a quick promo video. This song needs a video and might get lost in the mix while they wait to get one,
LYRICS- 2($$) these lyrics were production filler. But it works for this song.
THE SONG- 3($$$) I like this song. It’s gonna be interesting to see if it can be around the second lap (you need to make 4 laps to be in rotation)
TOTAL- 19 PTS out of 40 pts (Grade C) This song will really need the promotions wheel to be in motion. Remember lap 1 is the streets, lap 2 clubs, lap 3 is radio and the final leg is sales. Promotions will really have to deliver this song

As I’ve said over and over again, “It’s about the song.” Ok Emeli Sande is a beast, it’s official (whats in the water in England?). All these artist with these monster voices, but what’s really up is their ability to find these monster songs. I mean these songs from these british artist are Super Dooper (I know) big hit songs. This song by Emeli Sande was out almost a year ago (and 16 million youtube views later) and it has found it’s way into Urban Radio (note to new artist, that’s 16 million views and a year of growth to get traction. #Okkkk). This song is a monster. Here’s the stats:
THE TRACK- 5($$$$$) this production is masterful (mix and all)…..
THE PERFORMANCE- 5($$$$$) I can’t even play. Why did it take a year to get this song out?......
MUSCLE- 2($$) this is not a street song but it has all the tools to creep…..
JUICE- 3($$$) radio will love this song. It’s a great midday song and both Churban and Urban radio will flex this song. (man the EDM dance remix on this OooohWeeeee..#SMH #IJS)
TIMING- 3($$$) Why did it take a year for traction on this song (WTF)?
VIDEO- 5($$$$$) this message in this video is compelling. This is a touching message about friendship……
LYRICS- 5($$$$$) these lyrics are a Hallmark Card #RealTalk…..
THE SONG- 5($$$$$) This is a great song performed by a great artist. Chemistry plus a hit song, it’s not that hard. They hit the mark with this one…….
TOTAL- 33pts out of 40(grade A-) this song is a smash and if it gets any traction in the streets it’s gone. Songs like this is why I write this blog. To wake up and hear great songs like this is the mission. A great song leads you to a hit fan base and that’s the bottomline.
Man this Pusha T was a surprise. I love this track and the lyrics are really on point. “I Put Numbers On The Boards” is a track that takes you back to old hip hop. This is a great cut. Here’s the stats:
THE TRACK: 4($$$$) this track is hot. It takes you back to classic hip hop (“Shook One” Mobb Deep)
THE PERFORMANCE: 4($$$$) Pusha T delivers and let folks know “This is me”….
MUSCLE- 2($$) this ones gonna do good up north but you need the south, west, and the middle and south Midwest states to bring this home. Classic heads will feel this. It will have to grow on locals….
JUICE- 2($$) it going to be interesting to watch radio on this one…
TIMING- 2($$) this cut’s a surprise. It might catch legs through the colleges and the military bases…..
VIDEO- 3($$$) the video delivers the message…
THE LYRICS- 4($$$$) the simplicity combined with the impactive lyrics is hot on this one….
THE SONG- 4($$$$) This one snuck up on me but it’s a winner….
TOTAL- 25 pts out of 40 pts (grade b-) Like I said this one is a sneaker so it might just creep through.
