!st off let me be clear. I love Janelle Monet. I love her music, I love her style, I love her. That being said, I'm a little biased (can you tell). So Janelle has a new song "Queen". Boy this thang is funky, this thang grooves, this thang is uplifthing and this thang is hot. Janelle makes great music. Janelle is a great performer. Janelle is Janelle. So how can someone this talented and creative still on the fringe of this business. Janelle has had a hit, "Tightrope" was very close (I mean real close). This one here is also masterful and creative and inspiring. Then what's the problem. Janelle might be just a little to bright for the mass market. In her quest to change the industry she might be forgetting one major rule in marketing. Find the real market solution and deliver. That would be a hit. This song is a hit, just for a real smart market, therefore it comes off a little eletist to the mass market. From the Prince type grooves, to the Andre 3000 feel to her video, everything on this song is above the bushes for the Mainstream market( Ceaser had to really climb high to so a higher truths- Rise Of The Planet Of The Ape-).
The lyrics are masterful and Erykah Badu was satiating. Let's just hope the mass market can see all the greatness in this song I see.
