Cléo, a journal of film and feminism

Cléo, a journal of film and feminism | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Cléo is a journal of film and film culture, informed by feminist perspectives.

The journal takes its name from the protagonist of Agnès Varda’s Cléo de cinq à sept (1962), who comes to self-realization through the observation and mastering of her space. In the spirit of Varda’s film, cléo is an open space for emerging and established writers to address issues of film and feminisms.

Sharon Lockhart's first large-scale solo exhibition in Scandinavia opens at Bonniers Konsthall

Sharon Lockhart's first large-scale solo exhibition in Scandinavia opens at Bonniers Konsthall | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Sharon Lockhart, Podwórka, 2009. 16 mm transferred to HD. 29 minutes.

Bonniers Konsthall presents the first large-scale solo exhibition in Scandinavia of American artist Sharon Lockhart. The exhibition is accompanied by a screening program and public talks.

For the past two decades, Sharon Lockhart has developed a working method sensitive for capturing communities and individuals in their everyday life. Her working process involves long periods of research in a given location, where she familiarizes herself with the local community, often forging deep friendships and initiating a strong collaboration. Her meticulous fieldwork is then transformed into painterly tableaux of still and moving imagery informed by anthropological research. Lockhart´s oeuvre is characterized by turning space, time and bodily movement of the everyday into rigorously composed photographic works as well as architectural film installation. The particularities of a given moment are transformed into reflections on human existence.

Juliette Binoche brings stark film portrait ‘Camille Claudel 1915’ to life - The Boston Globe

Juliette Binoche brings stark film portrait ‘Camille Claudel 1915’ to life - The Boston Globe | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"As in his enigmatic 2011 parable “Outside Satan,” writer/director Bruno Dumont seeks beatitude in the midst of despondency, injustice, and derangement. The life of Camille Claudel (portrayed here with punishing conviction by Juliette Binoche) provides him with rich material. A brilliant sculptor and a believer in art as a secular religion, Claudel engaged in a lengthy and doomed collaboration and affair with Rodin that inspired both artists. They split up, and doctors diagnosed her grief and fury as madness. At the request of her family, she was committed in 1914 to Montdevergues Asylum, a victim of a sexist, philistine bourgeoisie."

Moyra Davey : life without sheets of paper to be scribbled on is masterpiece - Camden Arts Centre

Moyra Davey : life without sheets of paper to be scribbled on is masterpiece - Camden Arts Centre | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Canadian artist Moyra Davey works across photography, film and writing to create intimate, flâneur-like visual essays on the everyday passing of time and her filtered relationship to literature. Davey’s camera often turns towards the overlooked discards and detritus of daily life while she recounts narratives from her collection of novels and philosophy books, weaving these with anecdotes from her lived present and reflections on her relationships with family, literary influences, psychoanalysis, travels and her personal surroundings.

Magic mirror : un film de Sarah Pucill - Monoquini | Gender and art | Scoop.it

Marijke van Warmerdam | e-flux | Gender and art | Scoop.it

"Leaves and a feather dancing in the wind, flowers in bloom, and a girl performing a handstand: the works of Marijke van Warmerdam explore simple things in a remarkable way. Born in 1959, Van Warmerdam lives and works in Amsterdam and Karlsruhe. She constructs images and uses photographic and filming techniques in a way that opens up unexpected perspectives and accentuates the quiet beauty of small things.

The artist is best known for her short, looped recordings. The Kunsthalle will be showing some of her well-known films such as Handstand (1992), Skytypers (1997), and Couple (2010) as projections. Alongside her videos and films, the artist will also be exhibiting sculptures and film stills printed on canvas and partially painted with acrylics."
