Last month the Government announced it would launch legislation to introduce an Independent Football Regulator – and that legislation continued its progress through Parliament with its second reading today.
April 18 – FA Cup replays will be scrapped from the first round onwards in the 2024-25 competition, as part of a series of changes made by a new six-year agreement between the Football Association (FA) and the Premier League.
Ticket prices are in the news with a wave of rises throughout the Premier League and supporters groups at Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have been speaking out.
April 8 – City Football Group (CFG) have revealed a £112 million loss for the year 2023, despite prize asset Manchester City raking in record-breaking in their treble winning season. Despite the damning figure, CFG reported an improved sum from last year’s £137 million loss. CFG, a holding company controlled by Sheikh Mansour’s Newton Investment and Development LLC in Abu Dhabi, has an ownership network that spans 13 football clubs worldwide.
Scott Kippax, Neil Vinnicombe and Simon Haskew of Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators of the club - and the statement confirmed there have been bids to buy Torquay United
April 2 – More pressure has been heaped on English Premier League club Everton after they reported losses of £89.1 million for the 2022-23 season in their latest accounts report, almost double the previous figure of £44.7 million in the previous campaign. The club were docked 10 points earlier this season, reduced on appeal to six, for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules and are waiting to learn if they will face more punishment for further breaches.
April 3 – Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion have reported a record profit after tax for the 2022/23 season of £122.8 million, a jump of almost £100 million on the £24.1 million reported the previous year. Turnover also grew a record 17.2% to £204.5 million, against £174.5 million.
April 25 – For the first time English Premier League clubs are set to discuss a hard salary cap at their next shareholders meeting on Monday but the proposal is likely to face strong opposition. The proposed cap – known as anchoring – would limit clubs to spending only a proportion of the amount the league’s bottom club receives in TV money on transfers, wages and agents.
April 12 – English Premier League clubs have agreed new financial fair play rules but they will not be introduced until the 2025-26 season. Leading the rule changes is a shift away from the profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) that allowed clubs to report losses of no more than £105 million over a three-year period.
April 8 – Everton have been deducted two points for a second breach of the English Premier League’s financial rules, plunging the club back towards the relegation zone with seven games remaining. Everton had already received a six-point deduction – reduced from an initial 10 following an appeal – for overspending in a three-year spell up to the end of the 2021-22 season.
