Sinkholes — This dramatic sinkhole formed in Guatemala City in June, 2010. Geologists said that the main cause is human activity, though. A burst sewer pipe or storm drain probably hollowed out the underground cavity that allowed the chasm to form, according to Sam Bonis, a geologist at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Also contributing is the fact that the top layer of earth the city is built on is fairly unconsolidated and loose, thus making it prone to movement and erosion. This sinkhole was estimated to be 60 feet (18 meters) wide and 300 feet (100 meters) deep.
