I learned about flipped learning in on of my previous masters programs classes and I have to say that I am for this type of teaching method where kids are pre-exposed to material that will be covered in the classroom. This helps create background knowledge and engage them in the learning process.

I am designing a class that I am going to teach next year. It is going to have elements of being flipped or simply blended. In any case, I am looking into different ways in which I can assess student learning that goes on during semester, whether in the classroom or out.

Several tools are available that provide assessment for different types of situations...

Why Flip The Classroom When We Can Make It Do Cartwheels?

We all know what a traditional college classroom looks like: students in rows stare glassy-eyed at the professor who drones on, paying more attention to the equations he’s writing on the board than the students he’s supposed to be teaching.

Diving headfirst into the flipped classroom

Diving headfirst into the flipped classroom | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
In first semester 2021, I convened MATH3062 – Fractals and Chaotic Dynamics. This was my first time delivering the course, and to spice things up I chose to deliver it in the flipped classroom approach – delivering edited and concise online lecture material.

Having followed successful mathematics YouTubers for a few years (e.g.Numberphile and 3blue1brown), I’d been wanting to develop my skills with video communication. This semester was a good opportunity, given the uncertainty around in-person activities.

Flipping the Classroom Requires More Than Video

Educators experimented with flipping the classroom long before Khan started shooting video.

In 2004, a former hedge fund analyst began recording and posting videos of himself explaining some math techniques. He created the material to help tutor his young cousin. Rather than keeping it private, however, the analyst posted the videos to YouTube. By 2012, Salman Khan had more than 3,000 lessons online, 140 million views, and a reputation as an education guru.

Flipped Classrooms Promote Personalization in Higher Education

Flipped Classrooms Promote Personalization in Higher Education | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it
Digital tools cultivate engagement and encourage mastery by allowing for highly individualized instruction.

In a nutshell, the flipped classroom takes the content traditionally disseminated in the classroom, often in the form of lectures, and translates that information into online videos and other digital formats, letting students digest that content outside of the classroom. Class time is freed up to focus on inquiry, interaction and applying knowledge. In many cases, this means that what used to be classified as homework is now becoming class-work.

The Flipped Classroom Model: A Full Picture

The Flipped Classroom Model: A Full Picture | Digital Learning - beyond eLearning and Blended Learning | Scoop.it

"...One of the major, evidenced-based advantages of the use of video is that learners have control over the media with the ability to review parts that are misunderstood, which need further reinforcement, and/or those parts that are of particular interest.  (Using technology to give students “control of their interactions” has a positive effect on student learning,)

It is important, though, not to be seduced by the messenger.  Sal Khan is very charismatic and has produced good videos to explain some complex mathematical concepts.  With the growth of open education resources via Youtube and Creative Commons, it is important to note that excellent video lectures have been and are freely/easily available.  The Flipped Classroom concept, though, was not developed and articulated by Khan but by teachers such as Karl Fisch and Jon Bergman/Aaron Sams.

The problem is that educators, as a group, know how to do and use the lecture.  When educators are asked to replace their in-class lectures with videotaped ones (either their own or others) that learners watch at home, educators may not know what to do with this now void in-class time.  Those who advocate for the flipped classroom state that class time can then be used for discourse and for providing hands-on, authentic learning experiences.   In a recent interview Khan stated. “If I was a teacher, this is exactly the type of class I’d want to teach, I don’t have to prepare in a traditional sense. But I do have to prepare for projects and all that, so I have to prepare for creative things” (Meet Sal Khan).  As Frank Noschese notes..."
