A Tool for Self-Assessment & Reflection

A Tool for Self-Assessment  & Reflection | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"I have been working on a tool for students to do a self assessment/reflection and feedback...The tool is based around the work of Stephen Dinham which is used be DET NSW and New Zealand eductors John Hattie & Helen Timperley."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Andrew Church has created a tool for Self-Assessment and Reflection that asks students to answer 4 questions:

* What can I do? ((How am I going?)

* What can't I do? (How am I going?)

* How does my work compare with others? (How am I going?)

* What can I do better? (Where do I go next?)

And then students are asked to look ahead with this question:

* What are my next steps? (What actions are you going to take as  a result of your reflections? Who can help me? Where to next?)

You can download two versions of this as a pdf file. One is in portrait mode and one in landscape mode. Church also asks that you provide him with feedback.

Why It's Time To Focus On Skills (Not Just Cool Tools) - Edudemic

Why It's Time To Focus On Skills (Not Just Cool Tools) - Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
There is a laser-like focus on cool tools and apps these days. Eric Patnoudes encourages you to take a step back and take time to focus on skills.
Beth Dichter's insight:

How do we prepare out students to be 21st century learners? Should we focus on cool tools, or should we focus on skills? This post urges us to focus on skills. Tools come and go, but skills stay.

If you question this concept look at the ISTE NETS for students, which include (and are quoted from the article):

* Improving higher-order thinking skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity

* Preparing students for their future in a competitive global job marke

* Designing student-centered, project-based, and online learning environments

* Guiding systemic change in our schools to create digital places of learning

* Inspiring digital age professional models for working, collaborating, and decision making.

None of these mention a specific tool. As you plan a new lesson rather than focusing on a tool, focus on the skill you want to teach. As you read the Common Core standards the ability to transfer knowledge is evident. If we teach students skills the students will know how to find the best tool!

A Detailed Visual Guide To Distributed Project-Based Learning - Edudemic

A Detailed Visual Guide To Distributed Project-Based Learning - Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
In an effort to help those teachers out, Katie and I found a fabulous new visual diagram that's all about which apps and tools go with the different parts of distributed project-based learning.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic looks at Project Based Learning (PBL) and divides it into three main sections:

* Organize and co-ordinate work

* Build background knowledge & inspire

* Co-design *making*

The second and third areas are then decided to more clearly deliniate the areas each covers. The last final two sections provide more specific concepts of what it required and also one or more suggestions of tech tools that will assist the process. There are additional groupings as shown in the infographic above.

More and more teachers are engaging in some form of PBL and this visual may serve as a great base to help create a strong foundation and provide ideas of technology tools that might assist in the process.

http://www.edudemic.com/a-detailed-visual-guide-to-distributed-project-based-learning/

I really like this resources because it shows where students are getting information for their projects.  The projects are learned through resources that are distributed across many different fields, websites, and search engines.  This allows students to engage in many different types of content curation sites.  Google and skype are a few examples of resources.  The visual is broken up into instant learning and coalitious segments showing how some sites are good for overlapping purposes.  This is an interesting view of PBL sources.

Reevaluating Ed-Tech Tools and Learning Games - Online Universities.com

Reevaluating Ed-Tech Tools and Learning Games - Online Universities.com | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
It's difficult to deny the promise that ed-tech holds, but educators must understand technology's limitations and best uses in education.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Is ed-tech working? Perhaps the best answer is "it depends" on many factors, some known and some unknown. When we talk about ed-tech we are talking about tools. For tools to be used effectively teachers must be provided with high quality professional development and support. This post explores the issues of ed-etch tools by looking at how programs in a variety of locations has worked and exploring additional issues including:

* Are students experiencing digital overload?
* How does digital reading impact learning?

* How does Google (let's call it using the Internet since not everyone uses Google) impact your brain and learning?

* How can ed-tech tools help build 21st century learning skills?

There is much food for thought in this post and I will leave you with a quote from Sylvia Martinez, the president of Generation YES, "The best way to use tech in the classroom is when the technology primarily supports the process of student learning, not the product. Sure, it’s easy to get excited when we find tools that make things easier, but we have to be careful about what’s getting automated. Tools that support deep student creativity may take more time to learn, but in the end, give students access to powerful, creative experiences. The learning that takes place on the journey is the real outcome, and a "push-button" tool deprives the child of that experience."

That's okay! I found it a great article that will help me keep in mind that technology needs to be used smartly and not necessarily to excess to help students learn to use and explore it.

This 11-year-old could not find a good enough Facebook alternative so he decided to build his own social network, Grom Social.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This is a pretty amazing site, created by an 11 year old as a safe social site for children. This post from provides a great overview, but perhaps the word of the founder says it the best...

"I have been building my site since Nov. 2011. I spend lots of time drawing new graphics, researching new games, fun facts, cool kids books, cool videos, nutrition tips and highlighting the best young up and coming athletes. It is coming along well.  Kids seem to like my site, especially the Grom Helpers and the games. I am excited to watch it grow. I am proud of my efforts in making my idea a reality."
