Beth Dichter's insight:

If you were to sort students into six categories based on how they use mobile technology what categories would you come up with, and what evidence would you use to support these categories. In this infographic the Internet Innovation Alliance provides the six categories and provides some data (with links!).

Text Talk: Are Abbreviated Text Messages Proof that We're Linguistically Doomed? | Online Schools | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"From OMG to LOL, there’s no denying that texting has changed the way we communicate with each other. Look no further than the fact that you don’t need clarification of what OMG or LOL means as proof that our written communication is evolving."

There have been a number of studies that look at how texting impacts education, but results are mixed. Do you think that "text talk" is now a "legitimate form of communication"? Will it improve our communication or negatively impact it? For more information check out the infographic.

Gauging Your Distraction - What Happens When You Text and Drive?

Gauging Your Distraction - What Happens When You Text and Drive? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The NY Times has an interactive game that "measures how your reaction time is affected by external distractions." The goal, to reply to three text messages while you are driving on a six-lane highway...and it is not as easy as one might think. Although some may say this is a great game for teen drivers, I would suggest that anyone who sends text messages while driving should take this game for a drive!

Please use this link since the one I first put in seems not to work:

The Innovative Educator: Using Cell Phones to Increase Student Achievement and Engagement with Reading and Writing

The Innovative Educator: Using Cell Phones to Increase Student Achievement and Engagement with Reading and Writing | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Cell phones are a terrific tool to support student engagement and achievement in reading and writing. To follow are some ideas explaining how teachers are doing just that by using cell phones in the way they are most commonly used among youth -- for texting and group texting. We will also look at a newly emerging trend...using cell phones to write novels."

jefferson stick's curator insight, November 8, 2017 11:30 PM
This article is really important for me, I have been looking for some information related to the use of technology to implement in my reading workshop. In this article, I learned something which is using the cellphones to have conversations with a special tool such as WhatsApp or any tool that permits people to interact and share ideas through writing or speaking. I will encourage students to share their ideas of whichever book we will be reading in the time we start the workshop through a tool, and also I will promote their writing skills.

Teens, Smartphones & Texting | Pew Research

Teens, Smartphones & Texting | Pew Research | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Teens are fervent communicators. Straddling childhood and adulthood, they communicate frequently with a variety of important people in their lives: friends and peers, parents, teachers, coaches...

The volume of texting among teens has risen from 50 texts a day in 2009 to 60 texts for the median teen text user. In addition, smartphones are gaining teenage users. Some 23% of all those ages 12-17 say they have a smartphone and ownership is highest among older teens: 31% of those ages 14-17 have a smartphone, compared with just 8% of youth ages 12-13.

For a look at the infographic, which looks at teens and texting, and that was published in July 2011 go to: http://blog.lab42.com/generation-text-teens-and-their-texting-habits

Teenagers Want Face Time More Than Texting Time | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Despite all of the technology available to teenagers today, they still prefer meeting IRL to texting and "liking" each others' Facebook statuses. A new study out from Ericsson surveyed 2000 U.S.
Teenage Sons's comment, September 23, 2014 11:53 AM
It's agreed here that young people want more face time with parents and other adults. I think it's important for parents to know this and act on it. Thanks for the info and getting this out there.
Hanis Mellani's curator insight, January 15, 2015 12:20 AM

Teenagers used social media on their phone to see their friends  frequently rather than meeting them in person.Studies shows that teenagers show their emotions more on the social media. I think that teenagers used social media as their social life as they wanted to escape reality such as stress. They also see social media as their 'world'.

Duz Txting Hurt Yr Kidz Gramr? Absolutely, a New Study Says

Duz Txting Hurt Yr Kidz Gramr? Absolutely, a New Study Says | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"If you've ever looked at a teenager's text message and thought it looked more like a kindergartener's scrawl, you might not be far off.

Middle school students who frequently use "tech-speak"—omitting letters to shorten words and using homophone symbols, such as @ for "at" or 2nite for "tonight"—performed worse on a test of basic grammar, according to a new study in New Media & Society."

The survey was only 226 students (Grade 6 - 8) so the sample size is small. Some of the interesting points were that students who received text message that used "tech-speak" were more like to send messages back in "tech-speak" and it did not matter if the students were male or female, although "teenage girls usually receive twice as many messages per month as boys do."

Does Text Messaging Lead to Lying? - Online Education.net

Does Text Messaging Lead to Lying? - Online Education.net | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Do text messages lend themselves to lies and deception? According to a recent study, people feel more deceived when they are communicating via text versus other forms of communication. And they might be right. These days, students are using cell phones to cheat on their tests and celebrities are using cell phones to cheat on their spouses.

Is this onslaught of cheating and deception a result of digital technology? Find out more about cell phones and lies in the below infographic."

Damian Knight's curator insight, October 1, 2014 11:03 AM

I remember in public school I'd just cheat on tests by writing answers on my shoe or having my book open partway across the room (My eyesight was better then) fact of the matter is that this is nothing new. Kids who want to cheat on tests will cheat on tests somehow. Way I see it, if you're skilled enough to con your way through life, then have a ball!
