Digital textbooks are in the news these days. Many publishers are providing digital textbooks at a cost. However, Boundless has "just launched the public beta version of its brand new site. With information being ubiquitous, I believe that teachers can (and should) take control of their courses by creating their own interactive textbooks. It might seem like a daunting task but the availability of quality materials online and the power of tapping into personal learning networks should make this a worthwhile learning journey.

Where are we when you look at open source textbooks? This infographic explores the situation and the solution, as well as sharing locations where you may find open source materials. (You might also do a search on OER in this Scoop.it for locations). Given finances of schools I think that open education resouces (that's the OER referred to above) will become more common...but that is my personal opinion.

I received a Kindle for my birthday, and enjoying "light reading," in addition to the dense science I read for work, I immediately loaded it with mysteries by my favorite authors. But I soon found that I had difficulty recalling the names of characters from chapter to chapter. At first, I attributed the lapses to a scary reality of getting older — but then I discovered that I didn’t have this problem when I read paperbacks.

All the sweet promises Apple is making are going to slam headfirst into the funding issue. It will cost a school 552% more to implement iPad textbooks than it does to deploy books. That ain't happening in THIS economy. The press reports I've seen have completely missed this because Apple "hand waved" their way around it.

I chose this resource to inform me about the latest technology trends.
There are alternatives to Apple products, like Chromebooks that are just as good if not better in an educational setting.
Principals should be aware of costs and utilize tech as much as possible.

Welcome to the Open Course Library of the Washington State colleges. This initiative aims to develop and openly share curriculum resources for 81 high enrolling college courses, to lower textbooks costs, and to raise student completion rates. There are many books in progress but a couple of dozen already on line. These are for community college courses, but many would be useful for high school.
