What is Privacy?

What is Privacy? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Earlier this week, Anil Dash wrote a smart piece unpacking the concept of “public.” He opens with some provocative questions about how we imagine the public, highlighting how new technologies that make heightened visibility possible. For example,

Someone could make off with all your garbage that’s put out on the street, and carefully record how many used condoms or pregnancy tests or discarded pill bottles are in the trash, and then post that information up on the web along with your name and your address. There’s probably no law against it in your area. Trash on the curb is public."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Is your definition of privacy different from your students definition? Our world is changing quickly and the concept of privacy is also changing. This post by Danah Body explores this issue and will provide ideas that you may want to use with students in your classes. As this school year commences the need to understand the issue of privacy, esp. online where so much information is gathered about each of us, often without us being aware of it, is important for students to understand.

Teens, Smartphones & Texting | Pew Research

Teens, Smartphones & Texting | Pew Research | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Teens are fervent communicators. Straddling childhood and adulthood, they communicate frequently with a variety of important people in their lives: friends and peers, parents, teachers, coaches...

The volume of texting among teens has risen from 50 texts a day in 2009 to 60 texts for the median teen text user. In addition, smartphones are gaining teenage users. Some 23% of all those ages 12-17 say they have a smartphone and ownership is highest among older teens: 31% of those ages 14-17 have a smartphone, compared with just 8% of youth ages 12-13.

For a look at the infographic, which looks at teens and texting, and that was published in July 2011 go to: http://blog.lab42.com/generation-text-teens-and-their-texting-habits

Teenagers Want Face Time More Than Texting Time

Teenagers Want Face Time More Than Texting Time | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Despite all of the technology available to teenagers today, they still prefer meeting IRL to texting and "liking" each others' Facebook statuses. A new study out from Ericsson surveyed 2000 U.S.

It's agreed here that young people want more face time with parents and other adults. I think it's important for parents to know this and act on it. Thanks for the info and getting this out there.

Teenagers used social media on their phone to see their friends  frequently rather than meeting them in person.Studies shows that teenagers show their emotions more on the social media. I think that teenagers used social media as their social life as they wanted to escape reality such as stress. They also see social media as their 'world'.

Steph Alexandra's curator insight, August 25, 2014 7:28 PM

"For the vast majority of teens, social and other digital communications media are a daily part of life."

Again, this statistic report shows the popularity of public profiling among teens from 13-17 years. 91% of teens have experience using social media, and 51% of teens use a social networking site daily. With such statistics we can consider the social pressures and influence that virtual communication and public profiling has on the younger generation. Though this article doesn't look at the positives and negatives of social media interaction for this particular age group, it is clear to see that having an active public profile on the web is common, if not expected of the younger generation, for the purpose of communication and web literacy.

In understanding how a younger generation operates and interprets public profiling, is to gain a better understanding of web systems, their function and purpose, and of the direction of today's society.

Top 5 TEDxTeen Talks

Top 5 TEDxTeen Talks | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Not every teenager sits around, texting endlessly and at all the wrong times, causing their parents to worry about a possible addiction to technology. Some of them give TED talks in their spare time.

How will we talk about feminism? What does it mean to "fail," and why shouldn't we fail better? What is love? Why isn't America investing in young black men? And are the people who create change the silent supporters rather than the vocal leaders? In this curated selection of TEDxTeen Talks, the adolescent version of the adult TED Talks, five teens discuss these ideas and how they collide with their own stories."
