Hope and Optimism: The Other 21st Century Skills

Hope and Optimism: The Other 21st Century Skills | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Due to the interest of my post The Other 21st Skills, I decided to individually discuss each of the skills or dispositions I proposed that are in addition to the seven survival skills as identified...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Jackie Gerstein returns with a post on Hope and Optimism, another 21st century skill. Why hope and optimism? There are important skills/characteristics in this area:

* Positive View About the Future

* Can Do Attitude

* Personal Agency

* Engage in Positive Self Talk

* Belief in Ability to Solve Problems

* Belief in One’s Ability to Impact Positively on One’s Situation.

* Maintaining Perspective

* Sense of Efficacy

She then provides information and links to articles that have researched how hope and optimism impact students' lives in many areas, research based guidelines on how to build skills of hope in students, and more. This post provides much food for thought.

Beth Dichter's insight:

This new website from Jackie Gerstein explores technology use in social and emotional learning. Quoting from the site "This website has been designed to describe technology activities that facilitate social emotional learing.The links in the menu lead to descriptions of the individual activities. They can be sued within formal and inforrmal educational setting. Even though the focus of the activities are on building and enhacing social emtional learning, many can be connected with content standards related to language arts, oral communication, media literacy, and ISTE's National Education Standards for Students."

The website is very easy to use. There is a menu that provides a list of 14 activities, including Conflict Management Strategies Posters, Book Trailers, and Teach Tech to Grandparents. Most have samples of projects. Not all are relevant to all ages but she does state that she has used some with both elementary and college students.

Video Games and Social Emotional Learning

Video Games and Social Emotional Learning | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"A lot of talk, press, and focus in this era of learning is on common core standards and 21st century skills and literacies.  What is often neglected is the importance of building social emotional skills within the classroom."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post from Jackie Gerstein has two guiding principles :

* Social-Emotional skills and strategies should be addressed and taught in school settings.

* Video and online games can promote SEL skills and as such, should be integrated into classroom instruction.

Gerstein has divided this article in two sections. The first section looks at Social Emotional Skills in School. The image provides a guide social and emtional core competitencies which include:

* Self-management

* Self-awareness

* Responsible decision making

* Relationship skills

* Social Awareness

The second part of the post looks at the social emotional benefits of gaming. In this well researched post Gerstein provides a look at how gaming increases students self-awareness, allows them to self-manage their emotions to meet goals, promotes social awareness ("to be able to see the world through another person’s eyes"), build relationship skills and make responsible decisions. Each of these sections are described in detail with links provided throughout the post as are links to references.

Do you have students in your class that need to grow their social-emotional skills and strategies? If you recognize this need in your classroom take the time to read this article. It may provide you with some new ideas to try in your classroom.

First Class Ice Breakers Using Mobile Devices

First Class Ice Breakers Using Mobile Devices | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

All of my classes, regardless of student age or demographics – elementary gifted students or graduate students, begin with ice-breakers and team-building activities. I recently developed a passion for using students’ mobile devices to do so as this devices have become natural and personalized extensions of students’ “selves."

Daniel Weber's curator insight, October 18, 2015 8:06 PM

This source offers some interesting ways to incorporate technology in team building/ice breaker activities.  I hope to give some of these a try sometime.
