How To Read A Book: 3 Strategies For Critical Reading | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"If you’re not familiar with Adler and Van Doren’s How To Read A Book, it is worth, well, reading.

As you might’ve guessed, these have less to do with decoding, and more to do with comprehension. Actually, more to do with the perspective you approach your reading with."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Check out this sketch note that provides three strategies for critical reading:

* Inspectional Reading

* Analytical Reading

* Synoptical Reading

Other terms might also be used such as Quick Reading, Close Reading and Cross Reading or Whole Reading, Parts Reading and Social Reading. Additional information is available in the post.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Here is a great visual that will help students look at how they study and what skills they may need to work on. This was designed for a college but would be worth sharing with students in upper elementary, middle and high school. Writing and reading go hand-in-hand, so learning these reading strategies can actually make you a better writer.

A list of tips and tricks (with explanations) that will help you become a better writer. Some of the strategies are listed below:

* Close reading (as in reading slowly, highlighting, taking notes...read carefully as opposed to quickly);

 * Try out loud, and not to a group but yourself...for more information on this and other strategies click through to the article.

Alexandra Real's curator insight, February 27, 2014 2:35 AM

Although some of these tips are helpful they are not specific enough when it come to actually reading. The title "Genius Reading Strategies" is overly exaggerated. Reading strategies do not come from a set of paragraphs.

I have to point out one specific comment made in this article about reading. Having to "read closely" as opposed to skimming throught the text. I agree to this comment however I expected for the author to define what close reading is? What type of questions arise in order to create close reading? What type of topics should be highlighted? how exactly do you think critically? "Ask as many questions as you like" well what type of questions? I think this article could have done much better if it would have been thorough.

then again, we as Americans are always in find of quick and straight forward solutions to "becoming better" or to finding a solution.

Sharena Hamilton's curator insight, March 6, 2014 1:25 PM

10 Strategies To Reach The 21st Century Reader | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Like thinking, reading in the 21st century is different than in centuries past, endlessly linked in an increasingly visible web of physical and digital media forms.

So in this context of media abundance, what does the modern, 21st century look like? How can we appeal to their interests?"

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post provides more than the 10 strategies to reach our students, it begins with a look at:

* Media Design in the 21st Century

* What it Means to be Authentic

* Media as Schema

* What "21st Century" Literature Teachers Do

and then moves on to the 10 strategies. Several of the strategies are below (quoted from the post). Click through to the post to read more.

* Use combinations of media–classic and modern together, leveraging one against the other

* Allow students to pick media while you pick themes and standards

* Insist all writing “leaves the classroom” and is published–then design units accordingly

25 Reading Strategies That Work In Every Content Area

25 Reading Strategies That Work In Every Content Area | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Reading is reading. By understanding that letters make sounds, we can blend those sounds together to make whole sounds that symbolize meaning we can all exchange with one another.

Without getting too Platonic about it all, reading doesn’t change simply because you’re reading a text from another content area. Only sometimes it does.

Science content can often by full of jargon, research citations, and odd text features.

Social Studies content can be an interesting mix of itemized information, and traditional paragraphs/imagery..."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Along with the visual that provides 12 reading strategies this post provides an additional 13 strategies and links to 4 additional resources. The strategies suggested go across curriculum areas.
