Blooms, SAMR & the 3 C's - iSupport

Blooms, SAMR & the 3 C's - iSupport | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

All the iPad apps you'll ever need. Aligned to Blooms Taxonomy and SAMR

Beth Dichter's insight:

Do you use iPads in your school? Do you work with Bloom's Taxonomy and/or SAMR? Are you interested in seeing how you might combine Bloom's and SAMR using specific apps? If so, click through to this post.

The post takes apps and organizes in three categories:

* Consumption - which includes Knowledge and Analysis (split into Activity and Gamification)

* Collaboration - which includes Application and Synthesis (split into Assessment and Cloud Storage)

* Creation - which includes Comprehension and Evaluate (split into Multimedia & Design and Multimedia Texts)

Then read on and see how you might take these same areas and apply them to SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition).

This is worth a look even if you do not have iPads. The ideas of placing work into the three Cs of Consumption, Collaboration and Creation may be applied to work that students do, with or without technology.

Craig Badura, a PK-12 Integration Specialist in Aurora, Nebraska, has
developed a series of App Task Challenges. Each Challenge is a an easy to follow guide that gives teachers the opportunity to create products with an app.

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you have iPads in your school and teachers need help with apps check out these "App Task Challenges" created by Craig Badura. Currently four are available and you may download them here. Learn about these apps for the iPad: Camera, Popplet and Skitch plus there is an App Smash Challenge you might undertaken. iPad uPad wePad; Going 1-1 at St Oliver Plunkett | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to be invited to St Oliver Plunkett to be a part of their 1-1 iPad rollout to the very excited Year 6 class. Led by their fabulous teacher librarian, Ann-Mari...
Beth Dichter's insight:

This post provides access to three pdf files that look at the iPad apps that one school with a 1:1 iPad rollout loaded on iPads for teachers, students and one that looks at inquiry learning on the iPad (image above for this one). Choosing which apps to include in a 1:1 rollout is not always easy to determine due to the wide range of apps available, so looking at what others have done is often helpful.

An App Wonderwheel for Students on the Autism Spectrum

An App Wonderwheel for Students on the Autism Spectrum | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The Autisum Transition Handbook was created by grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Delaware Department of Education "to assist individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families by providing access to the most current and comprehensive information on the transition to adulthood."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This app wonderwheel is developed for students on the autism spectrum by an Apple educator Mark Coppin whom is also the Director of Assistive Technology at the Anne Carlsen Center. The wheel is split into six sections that define common learning expectations. Each of the sections then shows common learning traits, followed by app categories and then the apps (each of which is hot linked at the website). The six categories are:

* Behavior

* Communication

* Social Skills

* Need for Sameness or Routine

* Sensory Sensitivity

* Difficulty with Traditional Learning Methods

The link you to the chapter that discusses Assistive Technology. To go directly to the App Wonderwheel use this link http://www.autismhandbook.org/images/4/4c/Appwheel.pdf.

It is often difficult to know which apps to choose when we work with students. This resource may help you determine some apps to investigate for students on the autism spectrum.

Exploratorium's Experience Experts Deliver Awesome iPad App

Exploratorium's Experience Experts Deliver Awesome iPad App | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The Exploratorium has just "released Sound Uncovered, its second free iPad app, which the creators showed me during a visit to the unfinished museum. As I explored the app's exhibits, the tablet disappeared in my hands. When you launch this app, you're in the museum, no matter where you are...It takes 40 years of user experience wizardry to build a museum app this amazing."

Beth Dichter's insight:

The Exploratorium now has two free apps for the iPad. The first one released is Color Uncovered and now Sound Uncovered. According to this post "both "buffet-style" collections of short, multi-sensory exhibits. You can select from a table of contents or swipe through like a magazine. The first was Color Uncovered, which uses properties of the tablet's display to demonstrate properties of light. The new app, Sound Uncovered, uses both the speakers and microphones, as well as text and video explanations, to show off some of the surprisingly bizarre properties of sound."

I have found many wonderful resources on the Exploratorium website, and suspect that both these apps would be great to have on iPads used in schools.

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

If the SAMR model is new to you here is a brief explanation of the four letters that make it up:

S- Substitution - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change.
A - Augmentation - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement.
M- Modification - Tech allows for significant task redesign.
R - Redefinition - Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.

The SAMR Model begins with Substitution (as in read the poster from the bottom up to more clearly understand the model), moving to Augmentation, then Modification and finishing with Redefinition.

The SAMR model is the work of Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D. from M.I.T. For more information on the SAMR model check out his website at http://hippasus.com/rrpweblog/.

For an indepth look you may want to check out the presentation from August 23, 2012 with the title "The SAMR Model: Background and Exemplars."

Shannon Soger's curator insight, January 7, 2014 7:46 PM

Great poster, but it's important to note that what you're doing with the app will depend what SAMR level the lesson is. Keynote CAN be at Modification, but it can also be used as Substitution. For example, if a student is typing an "About Me" slide in Keynote, the technology is simply acting as a direct tool with no functional change in the task. However, if a student created an "About Me" presentation in Keynote that contained Photo Booth pictures of his/her family, and video of a family tradition that would bring the lesson to Modification. The student could not have "brought his/family" into his presentation without the use of the technology.

Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic looks at how technology shaped education for special needs students (in the U.S.). There are many sections in the infographic including:

* A Brief History of Children with Special Education Needs

* The Percentage of Students by Disability (ages 6 - 17)

* Then, Now and the Future

* Devices to Help the Hearing Impaired

* Devices to Help the Visually Impaired

* iPad Apps

* Psychological Effects of the new Technologies

* References

As educators we need to understand the history of Special Education and the needs of our students. This post presents valuable information for teachers across all grade levels and curriculum.

Shao Lin Lauricella's curator insight, October 30, 2013 8:26 PM

I find this super helpful. There are many more special needs children today than there were back in the day. Also today there is more use in the technology world and we need to accommodate to both. This is helpful because it teaches teachers who has a special needs students the different technology tools that will help those students specifically.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Paint Palette

Bloom’s Taxonomy Paint Palette | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"An article I read this week had me thinking about Bloom’s Taxonomy and what learning really is.  It led to me coming up with a new graphic for Bloom’s Taxonomy, this one a Paint Palette.  I like thinking about Bloom’s in the form of an artist paint palette because each color has equal importance.  For an artist, the greatest beauty comes in the mixing of colors.  Using a multitude of shades and blends on a canvas.  I think the same can be said of learning."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This is a work in progress based on student work at Anastasis Academy. We know that we would like our students to be able to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways, but often they find one way and that becomes the only way (from their perspective). In this post Kelly Tenkely describes her experiences with students at Anastasis Academy and how this experience has led her to create this paint palette that will contain two additional components.

Along with this palette you will find a painting that provides "students ideas for different outcomes and evidences of learning" and a component that is still a work in progress, that will "an app and website catalog organized by the same colors so that students can be introduced to the many options they have for the different types of learning and producing." You can see the page with apps in this post that are specific to Create and additional pages with apps will be posted in the future.

Sue Alexander's curator insight, July 21, 2013 9:40 PM

An excellent analogy, and a visual my students will surely relate to in the Art Room. I think this will be helpful as they plan and reflect upon their own learning goals.

Jessica Rebstock's curator insight, July 22, 2013 11:55 AM

I appreciate that this view of Bloom's Taxonomy is less linear. Every course needs a different blend of Bloom's learning levels.

The Padagogy Wheel - iPad Apps and Bloom's Taxonomy | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Rather than pedagogy this is the Padagogy Wheel,looking at Bloom's Taxonomy related to the iPad. Would you agree with where the apps are placed or do you find that your use of them varies from what is suggested above?

Allan Carrington's comment, March 8, 2013 6:29 PM
THE PADAGOGY WHEEL: Thanks Jenny for reposting this. I am the first to agree that some of these apps might be better placed elsewhere on the wheel also there are more than one place for each app and there is constant need for updating as new apps are released. Where I am planning to take this next is develop "app powered learning sequences" i.e. connecting more than one app together to build a learning activity sequence. This will IMHO generate a highly engaging flow of transformational learning .... what do others think?

Also I thought some people might also find my 1.57 min video thought provoking. In it I introduce this wheel and more research I am working on with graduate attributes, Please visit http://tinyurl.com/padwheelvid which will be redirected to YouTube. I am calling the method the CAMERA Method .. "Capabilities and Attributes Mapping for Educational Results inspiring Achievement" ... it's all about the students being all they can be. It is about mapping everything back to graduate attributes, values and capabilities These are more than learning outcomes, they are an attempt to define a graduate.

There is also the podcast episode I did with Prof Geoff Scott of the Uni of Western Sydney. He has done years of research into graduate capabilities (aka values or attributes) It is fascinating stuff in the context of Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. He has asked the people who give the jobs and catalogued what the respective industries in the market place want in graduates. Duh! Look at the list and ask yourself are they being developed in students from Higher Education or in Education in general ... this is why mapping is so important. Are we equipping graduates to excel and make a difference .... hmmm! Have a look and listen to http://tinyurl.com/alsltblog. "If you exercise these capabilities ... you will be employed!" This sort of stuff makes the "CAMERA method" worth developing. Comments are welcome guys? ... regards Allan.

iPad Apps for Multiple Intelligences - A Clickable Image

iPad Apps for Multiple Intelligences - A Clickable Image | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
What makes the iPad brilliant is that it caters to all different intelligences. In fact most apps touch upon all different types of intelligences. I've tried to match all of my favorite educational apps with their corresponding intelligences.

This post will provide links to iPad apps that are looked at using Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. It is important to remember that many apps may link to a variety of the intelligences. She also quotes Daniel Willingham "Children do differ in their abilities with different modalities, but teaching the child in his best modaility doesn't affect his educational achievement. What does matter is whether the child is taught in the content's best modality."

Each multiple intelligence is represented in the full image. Click on the app icon to see in the App Store.
