Using Digital Media to Enhance Educational Transfer

Using Digital Media to Enhance Educational Transfer | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Educational transfer is a key component of teaching. What can we do as teachers to help our students be able to take what they have been taught and apply it in new situations? This post explores this issue with a focus on how to use digital media to enhance the transfer.

It discusses recent research that has been published by the National Academies Press, "Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century".

Learn about the three processes that take place when a student learns a new idea. "Check out (the) awesome chart from National Academies Press that summarizes twelve simple, research-based strategies for multimedia design."
This post provides a glimpse of what you will find in the book. To go directly to the book (which you can download as a pdf for free) go to http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13398.

From Theory to Design: Exploring the Power & Potential of ‘Connected Learning’, Part One | The Young and the Digital

From Theory to Design: Exploring the Power & Potential of ‘Connected Learning’, Part One | The Young and the Digital | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

This post shares an experience in the Texas City High School and the implementation of a "digital media an design project with high school students." The author had worked with the school during the school year and observed many challenges including "the daunting and daily task of keeping students academically engaged; the corrosive effects of chronic absenteeism in the classroom; the impact of economic and familial instability on students, teachers, and schools; and the creative ways youth from poorly resourced schools and households are using digital media."

They set to work with a goal: "could we work with teachers and students to create a more dynamic learning environment?"

Read the article to see the project that was developed and what they have learned.

The Role of Tech vs The Purpose of Education | DMLcentral

The Role of Tech vs The Purpose of Education | DMLcentral | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Working in the field of digital media and learning, where the important role of new technologies in learning seems self-evident, the slow pace of change in mainstream education can feel frustrating. Responding to this challenge, we give a lot of attention to thinking about ways to support and encourage teachers to make greater use of the opportunities presented by digital media, but perhaps we should spend more time considering how and why technologies come to be used, or not used, in the first place."

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching

Using Bloom's Taxonomy In The 21st Century: 4 Strategies For Teaching | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Bloom’s Taxonomy can be a powerful tool to transform teaching and learning.

By design, it focuses attention away from content and instruction, and instead emphasizes the “cognitive events” in the mind of a child. And this is no small change"

Beth Dichter's insight:

But we are in the 21st century. How should we look at Bloom's today?

This post suggests four strategies to use as we look at the 21st century skills "which include persistent connectivity, dynamic media forms, information-rich (digital and non-digital) environments, and an emphasis on visibility for pretty much everything."

* Use every level

* Use asynchronous collaboration

* Allow students to BYOM

* Use Bloom's spiraling

Additional information on each of these strategies is available in the post.

How to design a digital media assignment

How to design a digital media assignment | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

So you want to have your students create a digital media project...but where to start...which type of project should they do? This posts explores this issue, providing a list of nine Best Practices as well as a variety of project ideas and resources.

The first  Best Practice is "start with the end in mind." In other words, identify learning goal (content and process) and understand what your students should be able to do by the end of the project. Ask yourself if the project aligns with the goals of the course.

Project ideas include digital stories, poster, infographics and more.

This is a great post for those exploring digital media projects for students.

Today the majority of college students use social media. Look at the statistics and you decide if the experience of college students is "enhanced or hampered by social media."

From Credibility to Information Quality | Youth and Media | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University released a new report from the Youth and Media project: “Youth and Digital Media: From Credibility to Information Quality". The authors reviewed literature at the intersection of digital media, youth and information quality - primarily works from library and information science, sociology, education and selected ethnographic studies. The top four findings:

1. Search shapes the quality of information that youth experience online.

2. Youth use cues and heuristics to evaluate quality, esp. visual and interactive elements.

3. Content creation and dissemination foster digital fluencies that can feed back into search and evaluation behaviors.

4. Information skills acquired through personal and social activities can benefit learning in a social context.

You may access the complete report at this website, as well as the infographic and a one page summary and an executive summary.
